Moisture Sandwiching: The New Trend For Glowing Skin

Who doesn't want healthier looking, plumper skin? Well, moisture sandwiching is the Korean skincare technique that promises to help you achieve it. As SL Beauty Contributor Adeola Gboyega explains, it involves applying all your skincare moments after washing your face – quickly layering products to lock in moisture long-term. Here’s how to get it right…

All products on this page have been selected by our editorial team, however we may make commission on some products.

Start By Applying A Facial Mist

Use a face mist immediately after cleansing. Face mists are full of ingredients designed to soothe and hydrate the skin, and ones like the 001 Skincare Rosa Damascenca Essence Mist will enhance the effects of moisture sandwiching by delivering an instant boost of hydration. When you layer products on damp skin, it allows for better absorption of any other products that follow. If you think your skin needs it, apply a hydrating face mist at multiple stages during your skincare routine to reduce any loss of moisture.

Then Go For A Hydrating Serum

Serums should feature in all skincare routines, but especially when you’re moisture sandwiching because they’re full of active ingredients that penetrate the skin. Since your skin is already moist from the mist, it’ll be ready to receive all the benefits of your serum. Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and glycerine as these are humectants that can deliver deep-down hydration – something that’s important in winter.

Lock It All In With A Moisturiser

After your serum, spritz another layer of your face mist onto the skin before locking everything down with a moisturiser. The richer the moisturiser, the better – although your individual skin type will determine how rich you can go. Sunday Riley Ice Ceramide Moisturising Cream is perfect because it’s a ceramide-enriched formula that’s designed to replenish the skin. When I use it, my skin stays smooth and hydrated all day. You can also add a facial oil or a rich balm on top to lock in even more moisture if you have really dry skin.

Don’t Forget Your Lips

Your lips need a little TLC too. If you find your lips are very dry during colder months, try applying your face mist or splashing some warm water on them first. Then, immediately go in with a rich lip balm. Look for one with a mixture of humectants and occlusives like the Paula’s Choice Hyaluronic Acid + Peptide Lip Booster, which contains hyaluronic acid and squalene to hydrate and protect at the same time. If you just use an occlusive balm without hydrating the lips first, they’ll just feel drier as the day goes on.
