Use A Modern Formula

The formula you choose can completely change the finish and feel of your blusher, so knowing the difference between what exists on the market is the key to getting the look you want. Cream and liquid blushers are ideal for beginners – or anyone who prefers a more natural, buildable flush. They’re easy to blend, melt seamlessly into the skin and are perfect if you’re after a fresh, radiant look. Powder blusher, on its own, is great when you want a bolder, more sculpted effect. It delivers higher colour pay-off and a matte finish. For the longest-lasting and customisable results, don’t be afraid to mix and match, starting with cream or liquids for that dewy base, then adding a powder blusher to amplify and set.

Nail The Placement

The placement of your blusher can make all the difference when it comes to lifting and enhancing your features. The easiest and most flattering method is to smile and apply blush to the apples of your cheeks, then blend it upwards towards the temples and hairline for a lifted, sculpted effect. Use a fluffy brush for powder formulas, and fingers or a brush for creams to blend it seamlessly into the skin.

For a more youthful, sun-kissed look, lightly sweep the blusher across the bridge of the nose too. The key is to blend well and tailor your placement to your face shape – higher for a lifting effect, wider for balance, and always in an upward motion to avoid dragging the face down.

Find The Best Shade

One of the easiest and most reliable ways to find your perfect blusher shade is to let your own skin guide you. First, look at the natural tone of your lips. Whether you have a soft pink, warm peach or deeper plum tint, choosing a blush that mirrors that shade will always flatter your complexion.

Alternatively, pinch your cheeks or take note of how your skin flushes after a workout. The colour that appears is likely the shade your skin naturally suits best. These cues from your own body are the most foolproof way to find a blusher that enhances your features rather than overpowering them.

Like most things in make-up, it’s all about personal preference but if you are looking for a little guidance, there are definitely some shades that naturally complement certain complexions…

For Light Skin Tones

For fair skin, soft pinks, peaches and light corals will deliver a natural, flattering flush.

For Medium Skin Tones

If you have a medium or olive skin tone, shades like warm rose, apricot and mauve will add warmth and glow to the face.

For Deeper Skin Tones

Deeper skin tones should look for rich berries, plums, burnt orange or brick red. These shades really pop and add amazing dimension.

Take It Beyond The Cheeks

One of the things I love most about blusher is that it’s such a great multi-use product – you don’t have to limit it to just your cheeks. I often use the same blusher on my eyes and lips to create a soft, monochromatic look that ties everything together. For this, I dab a cream blusher stick onto the apples of my cheeks, blend upwards, then tap the same product onto my eyelids and lips. It brings everything together without the need for lots of separate products. It’s honestly one of my favourite make-up shortcuts: simple, quick and always flattering.

Double Up

One of my favourite tips, especially when I want my blusher to really pop, is double blushing. I like to start with a softer, more natural shade as a base, then layer a bolder blusher over the top for extra impact. You can use a pre-packaged blusher duo or just mix shades to customise your look. It’s also a great way to ease into brighter or more vibrant colours without them feeling too intense straight away. Just make sure to blend well between layers so everything melts together.
