Make-Up Artist Adeola Gboyega Shares Her Little Black Book of Beauty

We all want to know what industry insiders swear by, so in this series, we delve into their little black beauty books. Here, make-up artist Adeola Gboyega shares all of her essentials – from the foundation she swears by, to the beauty book everyone should read, as well as the facial steamer no one should be without…

For A Glowing Base…

Pat McGrath's Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection Foundation is my go-to for a glowing base. The silky, lightweight texture applies like a dream, while the built-in vita serum complex keeps the skin looking plump and hydrated. You won’t get any caking either, just a dewy, radiant finish.

For Repeat Purchases…

If there’s one product I always buy on repeat it’s the Sunday Riley C.E.O Rapid Flash Brightening Serum. I always have a vitamin C serum in my routine and this has to be my favourite. It helps me maintain an even skin tone and it brightens dull skin in an instant, without any irritation.

For Skin-Loving Facials…

Dija Ayodele is an incredible aesthetician who is breaking down the barriers of professional skincare for people of colour. I’m so excited to finally visit her new clinic – West Room Aesthetics – for a peel. I’ve long understood the benefits of peels, but have always been hesitant to try it myself. Dija, however, is an expert when it comes to black skin so I trust her wholeheartedly.

For Defined Brows…

I always get my eyebrows threaded at the Blink Brow Bar in Selfridges. There is something about the experience as a whole that just makes me feel like a new woman. Good brows are the foundation of any beauty look, so it’s always a real treat and makes the biggest difference.

For Long-Lasting Lipstick…

Pat McGrath’s Mattetrance Lipstick in Soft Core is my current handbag staple. It’s a gorgeous pink tone that suits all skin tones and the matte formula is feather light, but really goes the distance – you’ll find it’s still firmly in place as the day goes on.

For Anti-Ageing Skincare…

It’s a cliché, but a really good SPF is a must when it comes to anti-ageing. I want to dispel the myth that those with a darker complexion do not need to use SPF. It’s so important to wear one every day and it’s the best thing you can do to prevent early wrinkles, fine lines and pigmentation. My favourite is Paula’s Choice Youth Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid. Not only is it lightweight and sheer, it doesn’t leave an unsightly grey cast on your skin.

For A Plump Glow…

I am obsessed with the REN Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic. It really helps to improve my skin tone and texture – I recommend it to anyone that’s after an instant fix. It’s gentle enough to use daily, and my top tip for glowing skin is a good exfoliator, so I use this every morning as part of my regular routine.

For Fragrance…

Perfumed body oils are my thing as I feel they last longer on the skin. Jo Malone’s Velvet Rose & Oud Dry Body Oil is my go-to. I always get so many compliments when I wear it and it leaves my skin feeling silky smooth and softly scented. Anything with Oud is my kind of perfume.

For A Good Beauty Read…

Funmi Fetto’s book ‘Palette’ is the ultimate beauty bible for women of colour and I remember when I first bought it, I couldn’t put it down. Funmi is one of my industry inspirations and the significance of this book is monumental. If you’re looking for an honest and engaging book that covers all aspects of beauty, then this is for you.

For Ultimate Relaxation…

Sunday evenings are made for relaxation, and it’s the time I like to unwind by giving myself a facial. Practicing self-care is important to me and I like to recreate an at-home spa experience. I’m loving Sarah Chapman’s Pro Hydro-Mist Facial Steamer right now – it feels just like the steam they use when you get a professional facial, and the radiant results are unbeatable.

For Hair Styling…

I recently purchased the Revlon salon one-step hair dryer and styler and it has made my at-home hair regime so much easier during lockdown. I have very thick afro hair and this tool helps to detangle and considerably cuts down my drying time – it’s a must-have.
