Where To Eat Smart Fish & Chips In London

It’s Friday – which means it’s fish and chips day. And while you can’t beat cod wrapped in newspaper by the seaside, that doesn’t mean it can’t be enjoyed in chic surroundings from time to time. From Michelin-starred interpretations to stylish newcomers adding a touch of finesse to the traditional dish, here are the best spots to try across the capital.

The Mayfair Chippy, Mayfair

The Mayfair Chippy was founded in 2015 by George Hammer, Pete Taylor and Jamie Jones. The concept was to design a quintessentially British chippie influenced by the owners’ northern roots. Traditional fish and chips are the restaurant’s specialty, but it also serves classic British dishes such as pulled lamb shepherd’s pie alongside Cornish fish and shellfish specials. The team prides itself on serving only the freshest and most sustainable produce and caters for all dietary requirements including vegan and gluten free. To complement the food, the restaurant also offers a selection of world wines and British gins.

Bentley’s Oyster Bar & Grill, Mayfair

Down a quiet alley off Piccadilly, Bentley’s has been serving fish and chips for over a century. Well-loved for its fresh oysters (the team shuck over 1,000 every day), grilled fish and steaks from around the British and Irish Isles, this stylish spot has been under the care of Michelin-starred chef Richard Corrigan for the past 12 years. When it comes to fish and chips, expect to sample superlative tartare sauce and mushy peas.

Hook, Camden

Hook started life as a simple market stall in Dublin in 2011, where the team made a name for itself with its ‘new-school’ take on fish and chips. Today, its Camden restaurant is a popular spot. Everything is made on site, from dipping sauces to the seaweed salt that adorns its chips. Fresh cod and haddock comes coated in panko breadcrumbs, while those after something a little different can order fish tacos or the ‘Dirty Fish Burger’ – cod or haddock in panko breadcrumbs with rocket, wakame pickles, garlic truffle sauce, chipotle mayo, hot sauce and homemade seaweed salted chips.

Kerridge’s Bar & Grill, Westminster

Housed in a grand dining room in the Corinthia Hotel, Tom Kerridge brought many of his team from the Hand & Flowers, The Coach and The Butcher’s Tap in Marlow to recreate his relaxed fine-dining vibe in the capital. A vibrant space that mixes old-school burgundy banquette seating and forest-green walls with modern art and sculptures, here guests can expect to sample one of Kerridge’s famed staples: think fish and chips with pease pudding, tartare sauce and ‘Matson’ curry sauce. Across the board, expect rich comfort food, cooked to absolute perfection.

The Chipping Forecast, Notting Hill

Notting Hill’s The Chipping Forecast buys from suppliers which use traditional, ecologically friendly, sustainable fishing methods. Provenance is very important to the business and the fish the kitchen serves can be traced back to the fishermen who caught it, their boat and where it was landed. Customers can select the likes of cod, hake, haddock and monkfish scampi, and can choose to have their fish beer battered, gluten-free beer battered, simply grilled or in panko breadcrumbs, fried in either beef dripping or rapeseed oil. Guests can also opt for St Austell Bay mussels steamed in BrewDog Punk IPA, garlic, cream and parsley; grilled Cornish sardines; and Cornish crab on toast.

Kerbisher & Malt, Brook Green

Kerbisher & Malt was established in the west London suburb of Brook Green by chef Saul Reuben and his brother-in-law Nick Crossley in 2011. The aim, then and now, was to make fish and chips the way the pair thought they should be – using fresh fish from sustainable sources, served with homemade salads, great beers and coffees in environmentally friendly packaging and in a nice place to sit down. The number one rule? No soggy chips. The team peels and cuts the potatoes themselves and fries them twice at different temperatures, giving the chips a crunchy exterior and fluffy, well-flavoured interior. The kitchen also makes its own sauces (apart from the ketchup, which is strictly Heinz), batters and mushy peas and have even brewed its own beer, Kerbisher Pale Ale.

J Sheekey, Covent Garden

Sienna Miller, Suki Waterhouse, Poppy Delevingne and Kiera Knightley have all shown their faces at this Covent Garden institution. Launched in the 1800s, this seafood-focused hotspot is now owned by the group behind Le Caprice and The Ivy, bringing with it a clutch of famous regulars. The J Sheekey Atlantic Bar is the most informal proposition, serving food around the horseshoe-shaped bar or on tables that oversee the open kitchen. Alongside towering fruits de mer platters and its well-loved shrimp and soft-shell crab burger, you’ll find an excellent fried fillet of haddock with chips.

FishWorks Covent Garden serves up the fresh seafood, responsibly sourced from Devon and Cornwall’s fish markets and day boats. An in-house fish counter stands at the entrance to the restaurant and showcases each morning’s catch, from south coast fish through to crustacea and shellfish, while a striking marble counter is the place to head for oysters. For fish and chips with a difference, order the Cornish ale battered monkfish fillet with double-cooked chips and minted mushy peas.
