The government has announced there will be a minute’s silence at 8pm on Sunday to honour the Queen ahead of her state funeral on Monday. Mark the moment privately at home, with friends and family, or out on doorsteps or in the street with neighbours. Community groups, clubs and other organisations across the UK are also being encouraged to take part, and details of larger-scale public events to be held across the country will be published in due course.

The Lying-in-State of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is taking place until 6:30am on Monday 19th September. During the formal occasion, the late monarch’s coffin has been placed on view to allow the public to pay their respects before the funeral ceremony on Monday at 11am. While the queues are currently stretching for miles, those who’ve already done it have said it moves quickly and that there’s a celebratory mood among those waiting. Gavin Bond at Hamilton’s Gallery
Proof that the events of London Fashion Week aren’t limited to the catwalk, this captivating photography exhibition showcases one of the biggest names in fashion: Gavin Bond. Featuring previously unseen footage from his archives, the images hark back to his student days at Central Saint Martins, where his contemporaries included Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen. While there, he was given a free pass to London Fashion Week, which led him to develop his own take on reportage photography. With over 50 images to peruse, this exhibition – running for a limited time – gives you an unprecedented glimpse backstage at some of the most iconic fashion shows of the 90s.

London Design Festival
This month, the London Design Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary. Like London’s other great festivals for film and fashion, it doesn’t take place in one building, though the V&A is its main partner. Starting on Saturday, the festival will attract around 600,000 visitors from more than 75 countries. Expect installations, workshops and talks focusing on world-leading, thought-provoking design. It’s not all architecture – music, poetry and more are all in the mix. If you’re not sure where to start, head to the festival hub at the V&A to discover specially commissioned installations by international contemporary designers.

Open House Festival
Celebrating London’s unique architecture and neighbourhoods, Open House Festival takes place across the capital until Wednesday 21st September. Visitors can tune into talks, take part in guided tours and drop into studios – with some great chances to look inside some of the city’s coolest buildings. Highlights include a photography workshop at Guild Hall (Friday 16th), a tour of the National Theatre’s archive (Thursday 15th and Friday 16th), and an art trail around Barbican’s Fore Steet (various dates). Second Hand September has come round again, reminding us to shop in a greener way. If you have a pile of cardigans and jumpers that could do with a new lease of life, book in for Brora’s ‘Stitch It, Don’t Ditch It’ workshops, running at the brand’s Chelsea and Marylebone stores across the weekend. Run by seamstress Shelley Zetuni from Sewingsmith, the informative workshops will teach you the skills you need to bring much-loved knitwear back to life. Yinka Ilori at Design Museum
London’s artist-of-the-moment Yinka Ilori is behind some of the capital’s coolest artwork, from colourful installations and outdoor sculptures south of the river to the new interiors at Sketch’s Gallery restaurant. Now, he’s got a solo exhibition at Design Museum to coincide with London Design Festival 2022. The display showcases key elements of Ilori’s vibrant aesthetic, merging his north London upbringing and Nigerian heritage. Visitors can see 100 objects ranging from artworks, photographs and furniture to textiles, books and personal possessions.

The Crucible
Arthur Miller’s iconic play The Crucible is coming to the National Theatre. At the heart of this story of how fear spread through the Salem community during the witch trials in 1692, a group of young women find themselves in a world of turmoil. This new production, directed by National Theatre regular Lyndsey Turner (Under Milk Wood, Top Girls), features Brendan Cowell (Yerma) as the accused farmer John Proctor and Erin Doherty (The Crown, Chloe) as Abigail Williams. Performances run until early November.
