What To Book Around The UK This November

From a flurry of early festive events to a number of must-see exhibitions and plays, here are SL’s top cultural picks across the country this month…

HAVE A SINGALONG HERE: 9-5 The Musical, Edinburgh

This month, a touring production of the musical celebrating all things Dolly Parton will be clocking in at Edinburgh Playhouse for a one-week run. TAKE THE KIDS HERE: Beaverbrook, Surrey

This month, Beaverbrook has launched a new ‘Wild Woods’ programme for families with children aged 6-12. Run by party pros Sharky & George, the programme makes use of the 470-acre estate to lay on immersive woodland pursuits and bonding activities. New pet-friendly suites accommodate families of four and come equipped with a ‘Bedroom Adventure Pack’ full of games, crafts, teddy bears and storybooks. Every weekend, children will be entertained with activities organised from a treehouse hidden away in the estate’s forest. These include ninja training, boat-making masterclasses, theatre workshops, a ‘Silly Sports Day’ and cookery classes. The latter, led by professional chefs, will help children learn the basics of cooking and baking, as well as teaching them about healthy foods during a tour of the organic garden, where they can dig, and water and pick herbs and vegetables to cook with.

HEAD TO TOM KERRIDGE’S NEW PLACE HERE: The Bull & Bear, Manchester

Tom Kerridge opens a restaurant in Manchester’s Stock Exchange Hotel this November. Within the grand domed room that was previously the trading floor of the Stock Exchange, The Bull & Bear will be an approachable space, blurring the lines between elegance and informality, with a menu reflecting the Michelin-starred chef’s signature refined British classics. Expect favourites from Kerridge’s The Coach pub in Marlow, such as mushroom ‘risotto’ Claude Bosi; ‘The Coach Burger’ with smoked brisket and dill pickle; and chicken kiev with cauliflower cheese. Perfect autumn fare.

FIND ANOTHER REASON TO HEAD NORTH HERE: Henrock, Lake District

Simon Rogan has opened Henrock within Linthwaite House, a country house hotel in the hills above Lake Windermere. Head chef Brian Limoges has worked with Rogan to create a menu that utilises seasonal ingredients from Rogan’s farm in the Cartmel valley. The menu will also take inspiration from both chefs’ travels around the world – a step away from Rogan’s other restaurants, which are predominantly British focused. The main menu, comprising small plates and sharing dishes, will feature the likes of pine-smoked quail with fennel pollen, honey and quince; razor clam chowder with potato, fennel and sourdough; and crispy broccoli with lardo, yeast and caraway. Linthwaite House itself has undergone a multimillion-pound refurbishment and is now a beautifully designed contemporary hotel with views over the lake. Well worth an overnighter.

La Mariposa has Kray Treadwell (recently seen on Great British Menu) at the helm. The restaurant is inspired by the streets of Cuba, blending sun-bleached palettes with floral and foliage. Later this year, a city garden will extend from the restaurant, allowing guests to sample cocktails among foliage and lanterns. Guests also have access to an extensive communal kitchen and library space, which feeds down into the activity centre. This space will host events throughout the year, and features a panoramic balcony with view across the city skyline.
