TUNE INTO A LITERARY TALK: Jikoni X Caleb Azumah Nelson
On Sunday 28th March at 6pm, Marylebone restaurant Jikoni continues its Civilised Sunday digital series with a literary talk from Caleb Azumah Nelson in conversation with author and essayist Yemisi Aribasala. The two will discuss Nelson’s critically acclaimed debut novel Open Water, which follows the story of two artists falling in and out of love. Both are Black British, both won scholarships to private schools where they struggled to belong, both are now artists – he a photographer, she a dancer – trying to make their mark in a city that by turns celebrates and rejects them. They fall in love, and even though it seems they’re destined to be together, any couple is at risk of being torn apart by fear and violence. Tickets cost £15 and include a complimentary drinks recipe from Jikoni. For an extra £30, there’s the option to tuck into a specially curated menu, which includes sweet potato bhel, spicy peanut corn on the cob, baby aubergine and potato Swahili curry, and saffron rice.

READ THIS DEBUT NOVEL: Body Of Stars By Laura Maylene Walter
Looking for a new book to get stuck into? This debut novel by Laura Maylene Walter came out last week and we can’t wait to get started this weekend. Dubbed ‘the new Handmaid’s Tale for the modern woman’, Body Of Stars explores fate and female agency in a world where women own the future but not their own bodies. Celeste Morton holds a map of the future in her skin, with every mole and freckle a clue to unlocking what will come to pass. When she reaches puberty, otherwise known as the ‘changeling period’, the final marks appear, and her future is decided. But changelings are desirable commodities who risk being abducted by men. When her marks change, they reveal an unsettling truth about her brother’s future. Body of Stars is an urgent read about what happens when women are objectified and violently stripped of choice – and what happens when they fight back.
