READ THIS DEBUT NOVEL: Careless By Kirsty Capes

Kirsty Capes’ debut novel came out last week. This coming-of-age story follows the complicated story of teenager Bess. On a hot, sticky day in June, she finds out she's pregnant. But having experienced a troubled upbringing herself, she’s not sure whether she’s equipped to raise her own child. She could tell her social worker Henry, but he's useless. She should tell her foster mother, Lisa, but she won't understand. She really ought to tell ‘Boy’, but she hasn't spoken to him in weeks. Bess knows more than anyone that love doesn't come without conditions. Exploring what it means to be young and neglected in 21st-century Britain, it’s a moving read.
