What To Watch Online This Month

There are plenty of exciting TV and film releases to see you through the next month. With a variety of new picks across Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV+, here’s what to add to your May watch list.

The Essex Serpent, Apple TV+

Based on the bestselling book by Sarah Perry, The Essex Serpent follows London widow Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes) who moves to Essex to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. There, she forms a surprising bond of science and scepticism with the local pastor (Tom Hiddleston) but when tragedy strikes, locals accuse her of attracting the creature. Set in Victorian England its star-studded cast also includes Frank Dillane, Clémence Poésy and Hayley Squires. If it’s anything like recent Apple TV+ hits Severance and Slow Horses, we’ll be hooked.

EROS HOAGLAND

Tokyo Vice, Amazon Prime Video

We can’t wait to start watching this new series, and not just because Miami Vice’s Michael Mann directed the pilot. Tokyo Vice is loosely inspired by American journalist Jake Adelstein's first-hand account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat. Filmed on location in Japan’s capital, the series captures Adelstein's (Ansel Elgort) daily descent into the neon-soaked underbelly of Tokyo in the late 90s, where nothing and no one is truly what or who they seem. In addition to Elgort (West Side Story, Baby Driver), Tokyo Vice stars Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Inception, Batman Begins), Rinko Kikuchi (Babel), Rachel Keller (Fargo) and Ella Rumpf (Succession).

Gaslit, Amazon Prime Video

Gaslit is a modern take on Watergate that focuses on the untold stories and forgotten characters of the scandal – from bumbling President Nixon and opportunistic subordinates to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes, and the tragic whistleblowers who would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down. The story centres on Martha Mitchell, played by Julia Roberts, and also stars Sean Penn, Dan Stevens and Betty Gilpin.

The Time Traveler’s Wife, Now

Based on the beloved book by Audrey Niffenegger, HBO’s new drama The Time Traveler’s Wife stars Game of Thrones and Vigil’s Rose Leslie as Clare Abshire, Theo James as Henry DeTamble, Desmin Borges as Gomez and Natasha Lopez as Charisse. An intricate and magical love story, adapted by Steven Moffatt (the man behind Sherlock and the recent series of Dr Who), the series focuses on Clare and Henry, and a marriage with a problem... uncontrollable time travel. If it’s anything like the 2009 film with Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana, we’re in for a treat.

Dear Evan Hansen, Now

The winner of six 2017 Tony Awards including Best Musical and a 2018 Grammy Award, Dear Evan Hansen struck a chord with audiences and critics from its very first performance. Last year, it was released in cinemas as a film starring Ben Platt, Amy Adams and Julianne Moore. A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he’s always wanted: a chance to finally fit in. Both deeply personal and profoundly contemporary, this is a truly American musical about life and the way we live it.
