Black Is King, Disney+
Black Is King, written, directed and executive produced by 24-time Grammy award-winner Beyoncé, will premiere globally on Disney+ on 31st July, hot on the heels of the one-year anniversary of the release of the live-action remake of The Lion King. This visual album reimagines the lessons of the Disney classic for today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns. The film was in production for one year with a cast and crew that all represent diversity and connectivity.

The Baby-Sitters Club – Series 1, Netflix
Netflix’s new series is based on the best-selling book series that follows the friendship and adventures of Kristy Thomas (Sophie Grace), Mary-Anne Spier (Malia Baker), Claudia Kishi (Momona Tamada), Stacey McGill (Shay Rudolph) and Dawn Schafer (Xochitl Gomez) as the middle-schoolers start their babysitting business in the town of Stoneybrook, Connecticut. Alicia Silverstone plays Elizabeth Thomas-Brewer, the selfless single-mother of Kristy and love interest of all-around good guy Watson Brewer, played by Mark Feuerstein. A nostalgic must for fans of the books.

Legendary horror franchise Ju-On (The Grudge) is set to shake the world as Netflix Japan releases its first-ever Netflix Original horror series: Ju-On: Origins. The show will focus on the true events that inspired the story, mainly on a paranormal researcher who searches obsessively for a cursed home where something terrible happened to a mother and her child long ago. Can the people haunted by this house escape from its curse? And what kind of grim incident occurred in this cursed house in the past?

Stateless – Season 1, Netflix
Stateless is a powerful and timely series about four strangers whose lives collide at an immigration detention centre in the middle of the Australian desert: an airline hostess on the run from a dangerous cult, an Afghan refugee and his family fleeing persecution, a young father escaping a dead-end job and a bureaucrat running out of time to contain a national scandal. Co-created by Cate Blanchett, this one is on our must-watch list.

BlacKkKlansman, Netflix
Renowned director Spike Lee – of recent Netflix film Da 5 Bloods – teams up with Adam Driver (Girls), and John David Washington (yes, Denzel’s son) for this project, with Get Out’s Jordan Peele on production duties. The story follows the insane true story of an African-American police officer who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan using Driver’s Flip Zimmerman as his avatar. Sounds serious as a heart attack, but Lee delivers this stranger-than-fiction tale with his usual flair of satirical humour.

Hanna – Series 2, Prime Video
Based on the 2011 Saoirse Ronan film, Hanna is about a young woman with special skills and elite training, who after growing up in the wilderness with her father finds herself on the run from the CIA. The title role is played by newcomer Esmé Creed-Miles, while The Killing star Mireille Enos plays CIA operative Marissa Wiegler, who spent most of the first season hunting down Hanna and her father Erik (Joel Kinnaman). The first full trailer for season two reveals some exciting new developments. Utrax has moved to a new home called 'The Meadows' and Hanna is rejoining the programme, taking it on from the inside.

Young couple Tom (Jesse Eisenberg) and Gemma (Imogen Poots) want to purchase a house. They visit a strange estate agent, Martin, who tells them of a new development called Yonder. The pair drive out to the development, where the houses are identical suburban homes. The place is silent, empty and otherworldly. Martin shows the couple around house #9 and then vanishes. Gemma and Tom attempt to leave Yonder, but become lost – every route returns them to #9. When the car eventually runs out of fuel, they decide to stay the night in #9. Lorcan Finnegan’s satirical sci-fi thriller smartly skewers the banality of domestic life.
