My Life In Travel: Georgina Huddart
The last place I went to was Marrakech. We stayed in an incredible house called Azaren which is owned by the women who founded design studio Themes & Variation – it has incredible furniture and interiors. We also stayed at Kasbah Bab Ourika, a boutique hotel in the Atlas Mountains which overlooks Morocco’s natural salt park. Morocco is an incredible place to travel to from London as it’s only a few hours away by plane, but the culture is so different. It feels vibrant and exciting. The Souk in Marrakech is always a highlight, and there some great boutiques and markets dotted around. I bought lots of unique rugs and ceramics.
The most memorable place I’ve ever been to is Lamu in Kenya. When I was pregnant with my first child, my husband took me there as his family have been going for years. I’m the eldest of six, so when I was growing up, we only went to places like Cornwall, Ireland and Scotland – I’d never experienced anything like Lamu before. It was an amazing holiday, made even more special as we were in a baby bubble of excitement. That said, some of my fondest childhood memories are from family holidays to Cornwall. Rock pooling in the rain, sandy sandwiches and freezing sailing trips were all part of the fun.
The one place I’ll always love is Italy. It’s a beautiful country with lots of romance, and incredible food and wine. I love Belmond Castole De Casole in Tuscany, which is a beautiful 10th-century estate with 4,200 acres of land to explore. Florence is my favourite as it has a very slow pace but also lots of stunning architecture and culture. When I visited my friends at university there we used to ride bicycles, eat ice-cream and sometimes go to this nightclub called ‘The Blob’ which was legendary. The family-run restaurant Trattoria Cammillo is the best place to eat, while Gustapanino is a great square for aperitivo.
The most magical place I’ve been to is Cerbaia, a beautiful town in Tuscany. We stayed at Villa Cetinale with some friends who rented an old car from the village to drive us around. It’s definitely the best holiday I’ve ever been on – it had everything: friends, family, sun, swimming, beautiful landscape, wine, children. Villa Cetinale is a magical house – it even featured in HBO’s Succession.
One of my favourite hotels in the world is Le Bristol Paris. We were going to get married there but Covid had other plans! I recommend having a lie-in (the rooms are beautiful) and getting room service. If I had to live in a hotel, I’d happily move into Claridge’s or Ritz Paris. They ooze total luxury.
Hotel Trassiera in Seville is another special place. It's a family-run boutique where you feel like you're in someone's home – it's a real institution. I originally planned my wedding here but it didn’t happen because of Covid which was a real shame. The owner, Charlotte Scott, has four children who are all involved and manage different elements of it. It has such a unique vibe.
For a staycation, I always recommend Somerset. My husband and I have lots of friends there, so we usually have a really fun, relaxing time. I love that part of the world. If we stay at a hotel, we try to get a room at The Newt. I’d also recommend Beaverbrook in Surrey for a luxury break, and The Gunton Arms in Norfolk, which is so cosy and has wonderful interiors designed by Robert Kime.
The UK also has some of the world’s best beaches. During the summer months, nowhere beats Cornwall, but it can be a gamble because of the British weather. Zennor and the small villages along the Helford River are both magical.
For a city break, Lisbon has it all. You can have every type of holiday as it’s by the sea, the nightlife is great and there’s so much culture to soak up, from the food to the architecture. Plus, it’s fairly cheap, so you can pack a lot into a trip. My husband took me as a surprise for my birthday when we first got together. We went to all of the custard tart shops to try them all. For fantastic seafood, book a table at Cervejaria Ramiro – the queues are always insane but you can enjoy beers and cheese while you wait. For Michelin-starred food, Feitoria is pretty special.
I love a road trip. A few years ago, I went to LA with my friend, and we did a few trips out to Joshua Tree and the surrounding area which was so fun. You can go from a remote desert to LA to Palm Springs all on one trip; they all have such different vibes. We stayed in lots of different places, friends houses, Chateu Marmont for a few nights, and rented a house in Palm Springs that had belonged to a famous interior designer in the 70s.
The most memorable meal I’ve had on holiday was In Ibiza. I love fresh fish, so I jumped at the chance to try a few dishes at Chiringuito Cala on Xucla Beach, a tiny spot towards the north of the island. It’s very secluded and they serve the best gambas. If you’re going to Ibiza, skip high season and look out for the lesser-known spots.
We’d like to go to the Amalfi Coast for our honeymoon. It’s such a romantic place and has everything you’d want. For now, we’re going to Cornwall with some friends and our children. I’m also off to St Tropez for a wedding and I’ll go to LA for work soon, too. Two more places on my bucket list are Japan and South America. I’d also love to explore Central America and hit Mexico’s beaches.
My favourite holiday pictures were taken at a friend’s wedding in Spetses in Greece. It was a wonderful holiday – the island has incredible beaches and there are no cars.
My holiday packing essentials include sunglasses, denim shorts and men’s shirts. I also always take a pair of heeled espadrilles and of course, a Hunza G swimsuit, usually the Nadine bikini or the Jean in black. I also wear the tank dress and Clara dress in the evening with Le Monde Beryl flats and my hair up with a pair of hoops. The Hunza G SS22 collection was inspired by Cuixmala in Jalisco, Mexico. It’s a hotel with colourful design and earthy tones that really stand out against its lush green surroundings.
