The Best New London Bar Openings: April

From a new spot in Shoreditch specialising in gin and absinth to a top restaurant turned champagne bar, here are the five spots we’ll be drinking in this month.

Serata Hall, Shoreditch

Serata Hall is the fourth site from Albion & East, the team behind Martello Hall in Hackney and Canova Hall and Cattivo Hall in Brixton. The eclectic new space accommodates everything all under one roof – from daytime workspaces to late-night dance floors. Catering to London’s gin lovers, the venue houses an on-site distillery. Small Batch Serata Hall gin has a distinctive taste and is available for visitors to drink at the venue and buy on site. Roving cocktail trolleys serve this gin, plus all the accompaniments needed to make delicious drinks for revellers to sip on while dancing to a mix of London DJs and live bands. Absinthe is another feature: the venue stocks a range of styles served the classic French way – slow-drop fountain, goblet, stirring spoon and a sugar cube. Like its sister venues, Serata Hall will have 12 wines is available on tap, making it the biggest selection of tap wine outside the US.

The Little Yellow Door, Notting Hill

Following on from its sell-out pop-up just around the corner, The Little Yellow Door has opened a new permanent home on All Saints Road. Based on a fictional flatshare between friends, guests to the ‘flat’ can enjoy everything from inventive cocktails to board games. Set over two floors, The Little Yellow Door takes inspiration from the first flat, filled with colourful and quirky finds. An experimental cocktail list, named after the flatmates’ extensive DVD collection, features the likes of ‘Kill Bill’, a heady mix of Earl Grey-infused Bombay Sapphire gin, lemon curd and thyme. At weekends, the venue will serve up Saturday bottomless brunches and Sunday roasts. Downstairs, guests will find a secret hideaway, The Flatmate’s Den. Open until 2am, the space is kitted out with backgammon and poker tables, retro games and a music corner complete with vinyl players, instruments and live DJs.

Bubbledogs, Fitzrovia

At the end of the month, Sandia Chang will reopen the doors of Bubbledogs as a newly designed champagne bar. This will mark a coming of age for the Fitzrovia venue, which has spent the last seven years focused on gourmet hotdogs paired with fizz. Once it relaunches, we hear there’ll be an increased emphasis on hand-selected, approachable grower champagnes: an extended selection of cuvées from each grower will join the list, as well as the introduction of more wines from the champagne region. The space will have a whole new look: deep purple and mustard tones will be highlighted by copper accenting. Best of all, there’ll be a new marble high-top table, seating eight guests, complete with its own built-in champagne trough. The perfect pit-stop before an intimate, two-Michelin-starred dinner at The Kitchen Table at the back of the venue.

70 Charlotte Street, Fitzrovia, W1T 4QG; opens 30th April.

Near & Far, Camden

Near & Far London opened its first site in Peckham in December 2017. This month it’s launched its third spot in Camden. The concept across the group – which also includes a bar in Angel – takes inspiration from Palm Springs: expect to find lush greens, palm trees, leafy wallpaper, neon signs and desert shades. Set over four floors, including a roof terrace with views over Camden Stables, this venue offers coffee, signature cocktails and Mexican street food, where all dishes are gluten free and many are vegan and vegetarian. Party DJs take over the decks on the weekends, playing everything from Latin house and disco to reggae and Afrobeat.

Rebound, Wandsworth

Wandsworth has a new bar in the form of Rebound, a drinking destination with its own gaming hall. Inside, guests can have a go on shuffleboards, pool tables and fussball tables. As well as the physical games, the venue will screen all major sporting events, while the bar offers craft beers, wines and spirits. When it comes to food, the menu features a selection of artisan pizzas and pasta dishes, alongside some hard-to-resist sides. A varied selection of vegan and gluten-free dishes is also available, and there’s a brunch offering served at weekends. If you’re looking for a spot for groups, there’s a 22ft shuffleboard available to hire. We imagine it’s a great spot for a mid-week date night or Friday after-work drinks.
