5 New Bars To Sip In This October

From a boozer in Belsize Park to a new spot that sells both tea and cocktails in abundance, this month sees a raft of new places for Londoners to get classy or cosy. Fancy staying in? There’s a top spot that sells takeaway tipples too…

Teatulia Tea Bar

A tea shop, cocktail bar and literary salon, Teatulia Tea Bars aims to show Londoners a new way to enjoy tea. By day, the bar sells a selection of chais, all from the Teatulia garden in northern Bangladesh. But come evening, the place transforms to serve a range of tea-based cocktails, which have been designed by Dandelyans’s Enrico Gonzato. Of the list, we like the sound of the ‘Builder's Bourbon’ (black tea, blackberries, sugar, fresh mint and bourbon) and – now that the nights are drawing in – the ‘Chai Hot-Buttered Rum’ (chai, dark brown sugar, butter, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg and spiced rum). An art deco-style space with a mid-century twist, the intimate 16-seat venue also provides a ‘Living Bookshelf’. A name coined by actor Tilda Swinton, this is a monthly selection of literary material curated by notable writers, actors, musicians and filmmakers, all available to read with a cup of tea – or a cocktail. The first bookshelf has been curated by Tilda herself.

Genuine Liquorette

Set inside a converted Victorian pub on Rathbone Place, this bar and takeaway cocktail shop is the first of its kind in London. Promising to create an inclusive cocktail culture that allows everyone to make their own drinks, Genuine Liquorette breaks down the barrier between bartender and guest. The inspiration comes from the classic liquor stores of New York, as displayed through its neon signage, murals and 70s collages. On the ground floor, guests will find an ‘All Star Classics’ line up of six cocktails on tap. Created by bartenders such as Jim Wrigley of Bourne & Hollingsworth, the cocktails are also available for takeaway or delivery to be enjoyed at home. In the first-floor main bar, the venue’s signature ‘Cha-Chunkers’ can be found; a playful twist on the classic spirit and mix, this comprises a pre-mixed can up-ended in a glass of extra spirit. An all-American pizza menu offers the perfect accompaniment to those boozy beverages.

Neptune’s Wine Bar

Neptune, the highly-acclaimed seafood-focused restaurant from Brett Redman and Margaret Crow, has launched a wine bar. The 33-seater Neptune’s Wine Bar offers a relaxed space for a pre-dinner cocktail or a quick snack in the evening (Redman has devised a succinct bar snack menu, which includes small plates such as celery and caesar dressing; Mull cheddar cheese puffs; and hot buttered crab roll). Sharing the same low-intervention ethos as the restaurant, the bar specialises in grower champagnes and sparkling wines, as well as offering a rotating selection of selected wines by the glass. The impressive list is exclusively curated by wine consultant Isabelle Legeron, the world’s foremost authority on natural and low-intervention wines. To coincide with the launch, the team has also announced the much-anticipated return of ‘Oyster Happy Hour’, which gained fame from the pair’s first restaurant, The Richmond. Every day from 6-7pm, all oysters will be offered at half price and can be paired with a featured bottle of grower champagne, chosen each week and served at bottle shop price.

Heads + Tails

Launching in mid-October, West Hampstead’s Heads + Tails is a new late-night cocktail bar from industry heavyweights Will Partridge (Wax Jambu, Kilburn Ironworks) and Chris Dennis (Sovereign Loss, Disrepute). As its name suggests, Heads + Tails will be a bar of contrasts, both in design and its wares. Heads, a bright bar serving light cocktails, gins, wines and aperitivo, will feature full-length glass windows at both the front and rear of the bar, plus an outdoor area. This space will be juxtaposed with Tails, a dark, atmospheric basement bar which will be serve short, bold-style offerings based mainly on bourbon, rum and scotch. While both bars have their own distinctive menus, all drinks will be available to order throughout the venue. Some drinks exist in unison: upstairs, ‘Lightning’ is a low-alcohol offering based on Italicus Bergamot and Bianco vermouth, while its Tails counterpart is named ‘Thunder’ and comprises an aged-rum, brandy and curacao sipper.
