Stranger Things – Series 3, Netflix

Orange Is The New Black – Series 7, Netflix

 

The seventh – and final – season of this much-loved prison drama follows Piper’s path after prison as she navigates the outside world – while less fortunate inmates remain behind bars. Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon will return as Piper and Alex, after their series six prison wedding, with Schilling telling reporters she’s confident the union will survive their separation.

I Love You, Now Die, Now TV

 

In July 2014, 18-year-old Conrad Roy died by suicide in his car at a parking lot in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Police soon discovered a series of alarming text messages from his girlfriend, 17-year-old Michelle Carter, that seemed to encourage him to kill himself. This discovery sparked sensational headlines nationwide, leading to a trial that raised difficult questions about technology, social media and mental health. Featuring unprecedented access to the families, friends and communities affected changed by this unusual case, the documentary explores the changing nature of the justice system today, following a story that has wider implications for society at large, both online and in real life.

Queer Eye – Series 4

 

The new trailer for series four of SL-favourite Queer Eye features plenty of the Fab Five – Jonathan Van Ness, Tan France, Antoni Porowski, Bobby Berk and Karamo Brown – but it also reveals the show’s new home city and those being transformed. This time set in Kansas City, we can’t wait to see whose lives the fivesome change next. Don’t forget the tissues.

Behind Closed Doors, Now TV

 

P.A. Carter’s riveting Behind Closed Doors, examines the mystery behind the double murder of a 13-year-old girl, Aarushi Talwar, and her family’s servant, Hemraj Banjade, in their home in Noida, India, which sparked a media frenzy and has haunted an entire nation for more than a decade. The film reconstructs the story, beginning with the early-morning discovery of the murders, charting the initial missteps by local police, the hurried transfer of the case to India’s Central Bureau of Investigation, the use of dubious interrogation techniques, the sensational criminal trial and the multiple legal appeals. Utterly compelling.

Katherine Ryan: Glitter Room, Netflix

 

Katherine Ryan brings her acclaimed, sold out 2018 UK tour show Glitter Room to Netflix for an hour-long stand-up comedy special after an unprecedented four-week run at London’s Garrick Theatre in the West End. Here, Ryan shares shrewd observations about school bullies, revenge bodies and raising a very fancy child.

Girls Trip, Netflix

 

Four best friends, known as the Flossy Posse, have grown apart over the years. Yet when one of them is offered an opportunity to be a keynote speaker at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, she decides to bring along her friends to turn her work vacation into a girls’ trip. Along the way, they rekindle their wild sides by dancing, drinking, brawling and romancing to excess.

Derry Girls – Series 1, Netflix

 

Set in the early 1990s, Derry Girls depicts the lives of four teenage girls (and one of their male cousins) in Troubles-era Northern Ireland. Armoured Land Rovers, British Army check points and IRA graffiti is scattered throughout the series, but this is far from a depressing depiction of a war-torn time, rather it’s a genuinely laugh-out-loud tale that follows Erin Quinn and her friends as they attempt to navigate the highs and lows of being 16.

Wildlife, Netflix

 

The directorial debut from Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood, Little Miss Sunshine), Wildlife is an adaption of Richard Ford’s 1990 book of the same name, written by Dano and his partner, actor and screenwriter Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks). Set in 1960s Montana, the story focuses on Jeanette and Jerry Brinson, a married couple who’ve recently arrived in the sleepy town of Great Falls. They have an observant 14-year-old son, and when thin cracks start to show in their relationship, both seem keen to uncover more meaning from life outside their marriage – to miserable effect.

In a dystopian tale unfolding in reverse chronology, a man with a complicated past takes revenge on the individuals who wronged him decades ago. This arresting tale from Ho Wi Ding reveals one man’s fraught inner world and the circumstances that led to a life-altering decision.

The Theory of Everything, Netflix

 

Cambridge University student and future physicist Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) falls in love with fellow collegian Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones). At 21, Hawking learns he has motor neuron disease. Despite this, and with Jane at his side, he begins an ambitious study of time, of which he has very little left, according to his doctor. He and Jane defy terrible odds and break new ground in the fields of medicine and science, achieving more than either could hope to imagine.

Sully, Netflix

 

In January 2009, Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) tries to make an emergency landing in New York's Hudson River after US Airways Flight 1549 strikes a flock of geese. Miraculously, all of the 155 passengers and crew survive the harrowing ordeal, and Sullenberger becomes a national hero in the eyes of the public and the media. But despite the accolades, the famed pilot now faces an investigation that threatens to destroy his career and reputation.

A Simple Favor, directed by Bridesmaids’ Paul Feig, centres on Stephanie (Anna Kendrick), a ‘mommy vlogger’ who seeks to uncover the truth behind her best friend Emily's (Blake Lively) sudden disappearance from their small town. Stephanie is joined by Emily's husband Sean (Henry Golding) in this stylish thriller filled with twists and betrayals, secrets and revelations, love and loyalty, murder and revenge.

Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein, Netflix

   

David Harbour – of Stranger Things – delves into the enigmatic history of his legendary acting family, as he examines his father's legacy and role in a made-for-TV play. Through finding this lost footage of his father's disastrous televised version of the literary classic, he uncovers a series of shocking family secrets.

In 2001, editor Marty Baron of the Boston Globe assigns a team of journalists to investigate allegations against John Geoghan, a priest accused of molesting more than 80 boys. Led by editor Walter "Robby" Robinson (Michael Keaton), reporters Michael Rezendes (Mark Ruffalo), Matt Carroll (Brian d’Arcy James) and Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) make it their mission to provide proof of a cover-up of sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic Church.

Annie (Kristen Wiig) is a single woman whose life is a mess, but when she learns her lifelong best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) is engaged, she has no choice but to serve as maid of honour. Though lovelorn and almost penniless, Annie nevertheless winds her way through the strange and expensive rituals associated with her job as the bride's go-to gal. Determined to make things perfect, she gamely leads Lillian and the other bridesmaids down the wild road to the wedding.

Divorce – Series 3, Now TV

 

Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, the third season of Divorce follows Frances (Parker) and her ex-husband, Robert (Thomas Haden Church), as they encounter several bombshell surprises that spin their post-divorce lives in completely unexpected directions. Molly Shannon, Talia Balsam, Becki Newton, Sterling Jerins and Charlie Kilgore also star, and season three recurring cast members Tracy Letts, James Lesure and Dominic Fumusa return.
