The Best Green Spaces In The City For A Summer Picnic

A picnic in the park is one of summer’s simple pleasures and London has myriad green spaces to have one right here in the city. Whether you are simply grabbing a bite at lunchtime or enjoying a long lazy day at the weekend, here are the perfect picnic spots to head for, plus the best places to buy your lunch.

Primrose Hill

Primrose Hill is quintessentially London  – there’s nothing as magical as looking out over the city from the top. Head to the park through the pastel-coloured streets and just down the road from the main Primrose Hill High Street, you will find speciality food store Melrose and Morgan. It’s worth the walk. Choose from their great selection of salads or sandwiches on the day or if you’re organised, order their perfectly proportioned picnic hampers ahead online and pick up in store. Filled with salads, scotch eggs, hummus, and punnets of strawberries and presented in a pretty picnic tote bag - it’s the ultimate easy option. Now all you have to do is select a bottle of rose at Bottle Apostle from their amazing collection of chilled wine and you’re sorted.

Victoria Park

Between the beautiful Japanese temple and the swan-filled lake, Victoria Park is one of the best places for a walk, cycle, and of course a picnic, that we know. It becomes even better on a Sunday when there’s the Victoria Park Market with all of London’s best food on show and ready to shop. Your picnic can serve up Happy Ending’s negroni ice-cream sandwiches or Popina’s vegan Moroccan rolls alongside on-tap ginger kombucha from the market to keep you cool in the sunshine. The best part is you can pick your preference and go back for more as they’re open from 10-4pm every Sunday, making it the ideal spot for a long lazy day.

Regent’s Park

Regent’s Park in the summer will always be special - ice creams on sale and an abundance of roses make it one of the most summery spots to spend your weekend. Not far from the entrance to the park is Honey and Co’s deli - Honey and Spice. The food store is on the same street as the original restaurant and alongside selling ingredients to recreate their dishes at home, they also have an assortment of good things perfect for picnics. So hit up Honey & Spice for luscious middle-eastern salads with some of our favourite ingredients like roasted cauliflower and aubergine. Don’t forget to get something sweet too like their tahini halva brownies or sumac vanilla shortbreads to end your picnic.

Peckham Rye

Peckham Rye is a sanctuary in South London with sprawling green lawns, hidden Japanese garden and rose petal paths - it’s worth an afternoon to explore. On your way to the Rye, head to one of the best specialty food stores in London, The General Store, to pick up some simple picnic essentials like good bread, cheese, fruit, and wine. The store itself is so beautifully curated you’ll be spoiled for choice and want to buy everything. They really stock the best of the best – such as Pastel de Nata from Hackney’s A Portuguese Love Affair to La Grotta Ices ice cream – making this the place to shop for a simple but stunning picnic spread on Peckham Rye.
