6 New Restaurants To Try This June

We’re pleased to report June's batch of new restaurant openings span a seriously large number of cuisines – from Japanese, Peruvian and Italian to the very best of British. Read on for the latest eateries you'll want to book in London this month...

Andina Picanteria, Notting Hill

Peruvian restaurateur Martin Morales has opened his sixth London site, and this time it has its very own bakery. Located on Westbourne Grove, the 40-cover restaurant focuses on food traditionally served at roadside restaurants in the Andes. As you’d expect from the team behind Ceviche, zingy fish dishes feature on the menu in the form of sea bass, and is one of the highlights. But it’s the more unusual dishes that are worth seeking out; the carrot fritters, which sound unassuming enough, really pack a punch; while prawn croquettes deliver an earthy hit of flavour. From the ‘Big Plates’ section of the menu, we’d recommend the presa ibérica pork with spicy mashed potato, which was seared yet rare, and the grilled octopus, which melted beneath the knife. Whatever you do, don’t leave without sampling one of the team’s pisco sours. And don’t worry about getting smashed: just soak it up with a bread basket filled with the delights of the panaderia next door. The sweet potato sourdough was our surprise hit of the evening.

Koya City, Bank

Although this pretty Japanese spot opened in the glossy new Bloomberg Arcade last December, we’ve revisited this month for the launch of its new 26-seat terrace. Just in time for summer, the new space features long tables and benches, designed especially for Koya. It also comes with its very own Japanese cherry blossom tree, making it the perfect spot for al fresco drinks – think Japanese beer, sake and shochu cocktails. The restaurant itself now features an extended evening menu: highlights from our dinner include crispy fried prawn heads with sesame salt; kakuni pork belly braised in cider and the mixed seaweed salad. And you can’t go to Koya without sampling its hand-pulled udon noodles. Here, the speciality comes alongside a range of cold broths – we’d opt for zaru gomdare (cold udon with a cold sesame dip) or ten hiya-atsu (cold udon with hot broth, tempura prawns and vegetables). You won’t leave feeling hungry.

Sargeant’s Mess, Tower Hill

Michelin-starred Mark Sargeant is a busy man. The ex-Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s Head Chef has opened a plethora of well-received restaurants on the Kent coast since leaving the Ramsay fold in 2015. He’s also Chef-Director of Plum + Spilt Milk in the grand Great Northern Hotel at King’s Cross. But his newest location might be his most impressive yet – the Tower of London. The modern British diner, nestled inside the historical site, offers a seasonal all-day menu, with dishes including Atlantic cod with dripping chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce; steamed suet pudding of the day with mash, mushy peas and gravy; and pressed shoulder of lamb served with minted potatoes. Its terrace has summer written all over it: it offers impressive views across the river and Tower Bridge, and – our favourite bit – has a dedicated bar serving prosecco on tap, frozen cocktails and beer slushies. This café will keep tourists, and those after a tasty working lunch, more than happy.

Lina Stores, Soho

Since original founder Lina opened the doors to this revered Soho deli nearly 75 years ago, Lina Stores has become somewhat of an institution, providing homesick Italians and in-the-know Londoners with the very best ingredients Italy has to offer. And as of May, it has its very own pasta restaurant, using the fresh ingredients served at the Brewer Street deli. We’re a big fan of the aesthetic: from the beautiful mint-green exterior, to the open kitchen surrounded by an intimate 12-seat bar with reclaimed globe pendant lighting and leather stools. Striped green and white floor tiles lead guests down to the lower-ground floor, where green tiled banquettes and traditional terrazzo flooring complete the look. Must-order dishes include veal ravioli, wild garlic and toasted breadcrumbs; spaghetti, Dorset crab, chilli and lemon; and tortellini, black summer truffle and ricotta. Don’t forget to order a glass of something cold from the Italian-only wine list.

Hans’ Bar & Grill, Chelsea

The team behind five-star county hotels Chewton Glen and Cliveden House, and London’s 11 Cadogan Gardens has opened a new neighbourhood restaurant on Chelsea’s Pavilion Road. The 106-seat Hans’ Bar & Grill is smartly designed: white fluted timber walls are offset with original yellow-stock brick and pale-oak parquet, while dark-green banquettes, white marble-topped tables and statement lighting filled with hanging plants, combine to create an elegant aesthetic. The menu is rooted in British produce and underpinned by the classical cookery skills of Head Chef Adam England (formerly of Le Pont de la Tour). Expect to tuck into the likes of hot-smoked mackerel with a soft-boiled egg and Welsh rarebit; Dover sole with beurre noisette; and Loomswood Farm duck breast, blood orange, romanesco and kohlrabi.

St Leonard's, Shoreditch

We’re regulars at the antiques-filled Brunswick House on Vauxhall Interchange (it’s the only place to love around that fume-filled circle), so have been quietly excited about Jackson Boxer and Andrew Clarke’s new Shoreditch launch since it was mysteriously announced on Twitter. A new style of kitchen for the duo, the cooking space at the industrial-styled St Leonard's is open and based around a large log-fuelled hearth for cooking vegetables and meat, while an ice bar filled with raw fish and shellfish is paired alongside it. Jackson and Andrew will deliver a simple and ever-changing menu of fish and crustacea from the ice bar, followed by larger plates such as whole roast duck and ribs of veal. We’re most excited about test-driving the wood-fired turbot with raw carabinieros (giant prawns), shrimp-head butter and purple basil, followed by smoked Cherrystone clam with ginger vinegar, Sichuan oil and coriander. This place has a lot to live up to.
