The 10 Hottest New Hotels In 2018
Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi
Located on one of the largest lagoons in the Maldives (Sirru Fen Fushi means ‘secret water island’), this new Fairmont property is set to offer 120 luxury water villas across a pristine stretch of white-sand beach. An all-villas resort, the opening will be suitable for couples, friends and families. The resort – which is from the group behind The Plaza in New York and The Savoy in London – is also set to feature the Maldives’ first underwater sculpture museum, created by British artist and underwater naturalist Jason deCaires Taylor. Three restaurants will span Australian barbecue; a South American street food and pizza; and trolleys serving dim sum and Thai noodles. Activities include a sunset dolphin tour, snorkelling and diving and overnight cruises.

The Hoxton Williamsburg, Brooklyn
It was only a matter of time before cool hotel group The Hoxton set its sights on Brooklyn. Its first property on US soil, the hotel will be located within a former factory in Williamsburg. Alongside 175 on-trend bedrooms (think brass fixtures and plush velvet furnishings), there’ll be three restaurants, a terrace and courtyard, plus a rooftop bar. For those looking to throw a private party, its Apartment space is the perfect backdrop – imagine a house party, but in a flat that’s probably way better than yours back at home.

Billing itself as ‘curated for the playful’, the hotel will give guests VIP access to Marbella’s famous nightclub, La Suite, the Nobu restaurant and lounge and the private members area Owner’s Club. NoMad Los Angeles, LA
This one’s just opened, but we love it so much we still want to shout about it. Following in the steps of the New York original, the interiors of this Downtown outpost are modern and super-cool, but with a touch of history. Housed within an original 1920s building that was the former Bank of Italy, many of the neoclassical original features remain. Its 241 bedrooms are inspired by classic Italian style – we’re big fans of the Terrazzo flooring and freestanding bath in the RWB Suite. We love the look of the Coffee Bar too, which serves pastries and flat whites by day, before transitioning into a cocktail bar at 5pm. Elsewhere, the rooftop pool and cocktail lounge offers views over Downtown, while its restaurant, The Mezzanine, serves the likes of a whole roast chicken for two, with black truffle and brioche stuffing, baby turnips and sesame.

The Principal, London
Overlooking Bloomsbury’s Russell Square and clad in Royal Doulton thé-au-lait terracotta, this hotel was originally designed by Charles Fitzroy Doll in 1898. We’re pleased to report the team behind the refurbishment decided to restore the property in line with the original building – the impressive Palm Court remains, and will be serving afternoon teas from May onwards. Elsewhere, chef Brett Redman, the man behind The Richmond, Eliot’s and Jidori, will open his newest restaurant Neptune. Expect an oyster bar, caviar station and towering seafood platters aplenty. Fitz’s cocktail bar, designed by the prolific Russell Sage Studios, will make focal points of original features such as a fireplace and stained-glass windows.

Six Senses Bhutan, South Asia
This isn’t one, but five new Six Senses resorts spread across Bhutan. And with only 82 suites across all five sites, that experience should be high on the list for anyone looking for a real escape. Each of the lodges offers something different: in the capital city of Thimphu there’s a focus on the modern, while in Punakha the accommodation is modelled on a traditional farmhouse. The Gangtey chalet will have a bird-watching bridge, Bamthang offers a forest-within-a-forest, and fifth stop Paro has been designed with its nearby old stone ruins in mind. Guests will be able to move between each of the lodges to get a varied experience of Bhutan.

The Dixon, London
You’d never guess that this stylish newcomer was part of the Marriott group. Part of its Autograph Collection, The Dixon (nothing to do with interiors guru Tom) is set to open in the former London Bridge Magistrates’ Courts and police station this autumn. Named after the 1906 building’s architect John Dixon Butler, the 193-bedroom hotel’s design is set to stay true to its history: its sweeping statement staircase in the lobby and the wood panelling in the old court chambers will remain, but will be brought bang up to date with smatterings of modern art and statement lighting.

University Arms, Cambridge
We’ve been looking forward to this design-led UK property for ages. Designed in collaboration with interior designer Martin Brudnizki and architect John Simpson, the Cambridge hotel’s redesign will focus on its original Edwardian architecture. This style will be best displayed in the hotel’s 192 bedrooms, which will feature leather-padded writing desks, low ottomans and chandeliers. Within, expect Parker’s Tavern, a restaurant that will focus on seasonal British dishes – sample menus we’ve seen include the likes of Norfolk fruits de mer, suckling pig with wild mushrooms and Head Chef Tristan Welch’s ‘special Spaghetti Bolognaise’. Afternoon teas and Parker’s picnic hampers – for guests to take away to eat on nearby lawns Parker’s Piece, or on one of the city’s famous punts – will also be on offer.

The Jaffa, Israel
We’re big fans of the W Hotel group, so were excited to see it’ll be opening its next outpost in Tel Aviv this summer. Located steps away from the sea in the oldest part of the city, this design-led property is housed in a former 18th-century hospital, and will faithfully restore many parts of the original architecture. Our favourite spot? The W Lounge, which is located in the hospital’s old chapel – expect to sip cocktails beneath soaring ceilings and stained-glass windows. The Jaffa will have its own segment of the beach for guests, as well as a restaurant and bar in its central courtyard. A pool and spa will complete the offering – no doubt the perfect spot to recover after experiencing Tel Aviv’s famously lively nightlife.

Hotel Lutetia, Paris
This Art Deco beauty will shortly be reopening following a huge refurbishment project. A former haunt of Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Pablo Picasso and Renee Matisse, the overhaul will see each of the 184 bedrooms redesigned, as well as the creation of two penthouses with terraces. There’ll also be an eclectic mix of restaurants and bars (we hear that Michelin-starred chef Gérald Passedat will be heading up the kitchen at one of them), a cigar lounge and a new internal courtyard. The Akasha Holistic Wellbeing Centre and a 17m swimming pool filled in natural daylight will transform the old hotel from a place to spend the night to a full-on retreat.
