Assess Your Skin’s Needs
Numerous factors can trigger changes in our skin, particularly during the colder months. The primary culprits are the cold, dry air, which can lead to skin dehydration, resulting in dryness, flakiness, and a loss of radiance. Compounding the issue, central heating can further sap moisture from the skin, exacerbating dehydration and dullness. To address these problems, it's crucial to tune into your skin's needs. Regular skin assessments are a must. I personally make it a habit to check in with my skin at this time of year. It helps me maintain a steady skincare routine that emphasises hydration and gentle exfoliation. By doing so, you can counteract the impact of seasonal changes and keep your skin glowing all winter.
Invest In The Right Moisturiser
Make-up definitely has the power to make your skin look better temporarily, giving it a radiant glow when applied properly. However, it's essential to remember that good-looking make-up starts with a solid foundation, and that foundation is your skincare. Rather than relying on make-up as a mere mask to conceal any dullness, it's better to prioritise skin health. A good routine will lay the groundwork for flawless make-up. One tip is to invest in a hydrating moisturiser, as it will nourish the skin before you use a primer on top, which serves as the gateway to a seamless canvas for foundation.
Look For Hybrid Formulas
There are so many beauty products out there nowadays that come with formulas full of ingredients that work overtime to illuminate, hydrate and nurture your skin. Among them are what’s known as skin tints. They’ve secured a place in my beauty regimen for a reason. Offering lightweight, sheer coverage, they even out skin tone and deliver a naturally flawless finish. They’re a great alternative to traditional foundations and are an ideal choice for everyday wear but what makes them truly exceptional is their usually very hydrating ingredients.
Nail Your Application
I've also got a couple of technique tricks up my sleeve that will help you get glowing skin. One is blending liquid highlighter into my foundation or skin tint. I find it gives my make-up that lit-from within luminosity. Another idea is swapping out powder blush for a cream – the result is a multi-dimensional colour that doesn’t look flat and adds to that natural, skin-like finish. That said, there’s no reason to shy away from powders altogether – today's formulas are finely milled, ready to absorb excess shine and will leave your complexion looking polished and refined. Just opt for finishing powders with a luminous finish and seal the deal with a spritz of a radiance-enhancing finishing mist.
Play With The Right Textures
Texture plays a pivotal role in glowing make-up, and liquid highlighters and illuminating creams can work wonders. These textures seamlessly blend into your foundation or skin tint, creating that lit-from-within luminosity that catches the light beautifully. Concentrate on the high points of your face – the cheekbones, bridge of the nose, and cupid's bow – to accentuate and highlight these areas. By strategically placing these illuminating products on areas where the light naturally hits, you’ll enhance your facial features and add dimension, so nothing looks flat or lacklustre.
Balance Your Skincare & Make-Up
I take a really balanced approach to my beauty routine, and I’m really enjoying using both make-up and skincare to help me achieve good glow. For skincare, I love products that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid and vitamin C to boost hydration and brighten my skin. Don't underestimate the power of a radiant-finish foundation or tinted moisturiser either – like the new skin glow foundation from Shiseido that actually improves the condition of your skin as you wear it. The key is to balance both skincare and make-up to enhance your natural radiance – they can work perfectly in unison.
Don’t Neglect Exfoliation
Exfoliation is a regular part of my skincare routine, but it becomes even more important as the colder months drag on. It really is one of the easiest ways to achieve a radiant glow. By sloughing off dead skin cells, you stimulate cell turnover, unveiling the fresh, radiant skin beneath. It not only promotes a smoother texture, but it also allows make-up to look better once applied.
Try A Gentle Peel
Peels are a great way to rejuvenate your skin. The colder months are the ideal time for chemical peel treatments, too, as the risk of post-peel sensitivity in the sun is minimal. Chemical peels offer myriad benefits, from addressing fine lines and wrinkles to tackling uneven skin tone and texture. By opting for a chemical peel in winter, you can say farewell to sun-damaged skin and embrace a fresher, more radiant complexion. Look for user-friendly products that contain gentle exfoliating acids – just remember to wear sunscreen every day to protect that newly glowing skin from sun damage.
Finally, Remember To Take Care Of Your Body
We often neglect our bodies, focusing on our faces only. The body requires some TLC at this time of year too, especially during party season. The dry, harsh weather can leave skin feeling lacklustre, so it’s worth indulging in rich moisturisers and regular exfoliation to get rid of any dead skin cells. This proactive approach not only ensures smoother, more supple skin now, but it also lays the foundation for a more radiant reveal come summer.
