5 Steps To Help Your Make-Up Last In The Heat

Invest In A Primer
Finding the right primer for your skin type can make a big difference to the longevity of your make-up. Primers are designed to build a protective barrier between your skin and any other products layered on top – essentially, it gives the make-up something to hold onto, makes for a more seamless blend and stops it from turning cakey as the day progresses. In the heat, I like to use primers that hydrate the skin but reduce shine and correct uneven texture – doing so helps my make-up look fresh all day.
Apply Lightweight Layers
‘Less is more’ is a make-up mantra I use most of the time – but it’s especially relevant in the summer. Switching from full-coverage products to lightweight formulas will keep your make-up looking fresher and it’s important not to layer it up – it won’t last as long, and it will start to slide off your face within a couple of hours when it’s hot. Instead, apply your chosen base in thin layers you can build up gradually – and preferably using brushes or a sponge instead of your fingers for more precise application that stays put.
Use Multitasking Products
Having a multitasking makeup palette in your bag is a great way to touch up your look throughout the day. If you can, try to find one that’s curated for your colouring and contains everything you’d need for your face, eyes and even lips. Palettes like this are also great for travelling –when you don’t want to decant your whole make-up bag to take on holiday with you – so you’re bound to get good cost per use during the summer.
Blot Away Shine
Rising temperatures and higher humidity often prompt your skin to produce more oil – which in turn leads to a breakdown in your make-up as the day goes on. Combat this by using a setting powder as the last step in your make-up routine to prevent it from creasing or moving. For me, blotting papers or a blotting powder are daily essentials in my bag. Unlike a setting powder, which can look cakey the more you apply, blotting papers are made from an extra absorbent material that’s designed to lift and remove oil or sweat without removing the make-up – trust me, they’re a great way to freshen up your appearance without stripping back that fresh-faced glow.
Finish With A Setting Spray
Another crucial step at this time of year is setting spray – although it’s worth bearing in mind that not all are created equal. Look for ones that contain ingredients that are good for skin and will hold your make-up in place. My favourite formulas are lightweight but contain oil-absorbing powders which eliminate unwanted shine and oil. A great tip is to apply a setting mist before you get started with your make-up and again at the end – I also like to keep a mini version in my bag so I can hit refresh throughout the day.
