With its lush green surrounding and 42 acres of land, the club has a whopping eight-year waiting list. But besides boasting 30 of the best outdoor courts in the UK (and three indoor courts), you can also dine in their restaurant, have cocktails at their in-house bar and take advantage of their busy social calendar. As you’ve probably guessed, this doesn’t come cheap – beyond the extensive wait list, the cost to be a member creeps into the thousands.

Holland Park Lawn Tennis Club

There’s a two-year waiting list to get into Holland Park Lawn, but the wait seems to be worth it. With eight courts in total – five all-weather and three grass – the club is surrounded by beautiful west London greenery. It’s known for being a discreet oasis for Notting Hill’s rich and famous – which isn’t surprising, with its £1,200 joining fee.

Thanks to its six indoor courts and two outdoor courts, plus a very reasonable playing fee, it’s no wonder that Islington Tennis Centre is one of the best and busiest around. Chandos Tennis Court

Chandos in Golders Green is perfect for those who like a game after work, with its four outdoor courts –all floodlit – and four more indoor courts, enclosed during winter months (and shutters opened during the summer months). There are holiday camps for young ones, one-to-one coaching for those wanting to improve, and Improver, Intermediate and Team Advanced courses for every kind of player.

It’s not often you come across something great that’s free in London, but Ilford’s Goodmayes Park is offering fitness fans the full shebang for precisely nothing. Not only are there free tennis courts, but there’s also an outdoor gym, too. And if you need to warm up or warm down, have a brisk walk around the nearby sensory garden.

Southfields Lawn Tennis Club

On the corner of Gressenhall Road and Cromer Villas Road sits Southfields Lawn Tennis Club, with six hard courts (with one made from artificial clay), five of which are floodlit until 10pm. And the best bit? Their annual rate works out at less than £5 a week. They have eight different membership types to include all ages and budgets, with four club sessions a week – and if you want to hang around for a juice after practice, there’s a bar on site, too.
