Lily Vanilli
Long considered the A-list and fashion crowd’s go-to baker for one-of-a-kind masterpieces, Lily Jones is a self-taught baker known for her innovative cake designs, with clients including Elton John, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Alexander McQueen, Kate Moss and Shrimps. Her Bakewell tarts have developed a cult following among east Londoners – who flock to her Columbia Road shop – but you can order her brownies, cupcakes and celebration cakes online. We’ve got our eye on her double chocolate pretzel creation.

Cutter & Squidge
Cutter & Squidge is run by two food-obsessed sisters, who describe themselves as “a bit health conscious and not fans of overly fatty or sugar-laden foods”. So it makes sense that most of their sweet creations only use just enough fat and sugar content to make something delicious. We’re a big fan of their ‘Biskies’ – a biscuit, cookie or cake sandwiched with lightened buttercream, homemade jam and caramel – but the brand’s recently launched postable cakes (available across the UK) are also excellent. Each one is sent in a beautiful embossed tin, making them an ideal birthday present.

April’s Baker is a cake company set up by Roxy Mankoo, who trained at Le Cordon Bleu, and has worked at notable bakeries in London and New York including Lily Vanilli and Ron Ben-Israel Cakes. Launched in November 2019, April’s Baker creates cakes that capture a glimmer of fantasy and vintage elegance. Each bake is inspired by the dreamy landscapes of Wes Anderson, the pastel palettes of Miu Miu, and the artistic decorations of Scott Hove.

Anges de Sucre
French for ‘sugar angels’, Anges de Sucre is an award-winning sweet shop in the heart of Kensington, founded by Kuwait-born Londoner Reshmi Bennett, who trained in classical French cuisine in Paris at École Grégoire Ferrandi. Combining classic French techniques with flavours from around the world, Anges de Sucre offers a selection of jewel-like marshmallows and macarons, alongside its own inventions such as ‘Muffles’ (a marshmallow-truffle hybrid). Need a showstopper? Look to the team’s bestselling ‘Doughnut Cookie Monster Cake’, topped with Oreos and doughnuts.

The Bake London
Based in Wandsworth, Dominyka Griskin’s bakery needs two weeks’ notice to make its homemade creations, which focus on classic combinations: think chocolate and cherry, or lemon. We love the sound of Dominyka’s customer favourite: the ‘Medovik’ Russian honey cake, which layers honey and sour cream, before being topped with decorative dried lemon and rosemary.

La Molina
If there are just two of you celebrating, look to La Molina’s traditional Italian millestrati cake, which has layers of white, milk and dark gianduja with a rich hazelnut taste. Available from Selfridges as one giant slice, it’s the ideal size for a pair to share, but still keeps its sense of occasion.

The Proof
Independent Hackney-based bakery The Proof delivers fresh puddings and cakes to Londoners’ doorsteps. Founded by former music journalist and self-taught baker Francesca Strange, the bakery sells everything from desserts to celebration cakes and assemble-at-home ‘Proofiteroles’, which arrive with an array of toppings and require just enough assembly to convince people that you baked them from scratch. Celebration cakes start from £37 for a lemon and elderflower cake, although we like the look of her eye-catching shag-pile creations.

Crumbs & Doilies
Crumbs & Doilies cakes are free from artificial flavours and additives. The team uses only the very best natural ingredients available, including organic free-range eggs, Lescure AOC butter, organic Doves Farm flour, Tate & Lyle sugars and Callebaut chocolate and cocoa. Its meringues, curds, sauces, brittles and caramels are made from scratch every day, with each cake baked and decorated fresh to order. We’ve got our eye on the raspberry and white chocolate cake – four layers of raspberry-ripple sponge filled and decorated with white chocolate buttercream and raspberry, finished off with a white chocolate drip, gold-leaf chocolates, raspberry meringues and extra gold-leaf detailing.

Peggy Porschen
Often heralded as ‘the cutest café in London’, cake creator Peggy Porschen’s fairytale-like parlours in Chelsea and Belgravia have been the backdrop for thousands of Instagram posts. When it comes to deliveries, customers can opt for cupcakes, layer cakes, tray bakes, one or two-tier party cakes and vegan options, plus extras such as bottles of rosé champagne and party accessories like gold candles. We love the look of the pretty-in-pink 'Ring o' Roses' celebration cake, which comes with edible wafer roses and pastel pink buttercream.

Flavourtown Bakery
When it comes to design, quality ingredients and, well, flavour, Flavourtown packs a punch. Its cupcakes are stocked in Harrods and Selfridges and can be delivered across the capital. We also like the look of its ‘Ultimate Birthday Cake’, filled with vanilla ‘funfetti’ and raspberry compote, and covered in colourful sprinkles. The team is also well known for its gluten-free and vegan ‘Death by Chocolate’ cake. Bespoke commissions – no matter how outlandish – are also encouraged.

Clementine's Cakes
Born out of lockdown and the desire to show friends and family what they really mean to us, Clementine’s Cakes combines art and baking to create memorable celebration cakes. Each bake is different in its design and baked in Clementine’s kitchen. We love the look of one of her recent bakes, which was covered in dried fruit and edible flowers.

The Connaught Patisserie
The Connaught Patisserie team has created some impressive confections since it opened last year. Loaf cakes and ‘gâteaux de voyage’ – cakes historically designed to last through long pilgrimages – sit on the counter alongside lemon madeleines, walnut financiers, chouquettes, chocolate hounds and an exclusive from The River Café, whose ‘Chocolate Nemesis’ is delivered daily to The Connaught Patisserie – the first time the cake has been available outside the restaurant. The team now hand-deliver patisserie and celebratory cakes, which will arrive beautifully boxed and ribboned.
