A Top Interior Designer Shares Her Favourite Projects

Sophie Ashby is one of London’s pre-eminent interior designers. Having built her own successful business based on solid values, a passion for the environment and a strong social conscious, she’s now added a further string to her bow by launching Sister – a collection of consciously-designed furniture, accessories and future heirlooms. To celebrate, she’s taking the time to reflect on three of her favourite projects to date and why they mean so much to her.

Hexagon Apartments, Holborn

“I’ll always be totally taken with the colour palette for this project – we were inspired by the tones of the local area, which of course included the art and fabrics produced by the Bloomsbury Group. We like to start with the art when it comes to our projects, and I really enjoyed hand-picking some striking pieces from a number of fabulous female artists – an abstract terracotta earthenware sculpture ‘Standing Women’ by London based ceramicist and illustrator Aude Van Ryn, who studied illustration at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art, and a gorgeous piece by Belgium-based artist Stephanie Maeseele.”

Casely-Hayford, Marylebone

“I loved working with my husband, Charlie Casely-Hayford, on his Chiltern Street store. It was such a seamless process, as (without sounding too sickening) our style and vision is very much aligned. We like to think the space invites you into our world… A lot of the art is from our personal collection, the furniture from our old apartment, while the zingy splash of mustard paint was inspired by Charlie’s parents’ living room.”

Television Centre, White City

“This was the first home I ever owned, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. We knew we wouldn’t live in such a small apartment for a long time but we wanted to experience a new, modern way of living and feel part of a new community. We loved that the Helios building had such a rich heritage and the mid-century modern 50s architecture really appealed to us, too. My favourite room was the living room – it’s where we spent all our time, in a cosy little cocoon of colour.”

How To Get The Studio Ashby Look At Home

“Sister is a coming-together of all our Studio Ashby projects – and a way of sharing our bubble of eccentric colour, craft and play with you,” explains Sophie. “For the patchwork cushions (some of my favourite pieces) we recycled offcuts from past projects to create something totally new using with jester velvet, deep plum wool, floral and forest patterns.”

With prices starting from just £40, Sophie’s aim was to make an accessible and authentic collection. Look out for the shopfront, due to open in Spring 2021.
