See How Parisian Style Came To Life In This London Home
The Property
A typical Victorian terraced house in the leafy neighbourhood of Victoria Park in Hackney, the house hadn’t been touched for a while, so it felt quite dated inside. Fortunately, it still had lots of its original features and we could see it had great potential. The only major works carried out was a small kitchen side return and putting in new French windows that opened out onto the garden. The rest was redecorating with a few minor internal works.
The Brief
The brief was to create a welcoming yet sophisticated interior with subtle Parisian flair. Our client has two young children and when they first bought the house, it really lacked defined spaces so we needed to make it feel more coherent.
The design needed to be traditional and sympathetic to the period of the property while making everything feel timeless, comfortable and stylish. Our client loves vintage and antiques so this played a huge part in creating the scheme – these individual pieces would often provide the starting point for the design of each room. Vintage Italian lighting was another passion.
We designed a lot of bespoke pieces and this, along with the incredible selection of antiques, made the interiors feel original and distinctive. Our favourite items include the custom-designed kitchen handles, the bespoke marble flooring in the main en-suite, the plaster shell pendant light, and the handcrafted bed with fringing in the main bedroom.
The colour palette was inspired by one of our recent trips to Paris and after visiting the Marchés Aux Puces antique shops in particular. As a studio we are really drawn to warm earth tones and subtle pops of colour – in this case mainly pastel blue – which added a touch of sophistication. We stuck to natural materials, including soft-to-touch textures like velvet and mohair, and these also helped to soften the metals and hard lines of some of the antiques.
LET'S TAKE THE TOUR
The Kitchen
The kitchen is the largest room in the house with access to the garden, so we carried out a small side extension to bring in more natural light and create a wider, better flow to the space. The kitchen needed to feel timeless yet stylish and elegant and this original Art Deco pendant helped us achieve that – we love its bold design and chrome detailing, and this became the starting point for the scheme.
Detailing was key to creating character – for example, black accents and bespoke handles for cupboards, black decorative tile trims above the cooker, curved detailing on cupboard doors and the arched architrave enclosing the upholstered bespoke sofa with wavy base. Decorative elements elevate the space – antique wall sconces and decorative ornate gold finish vintage double arm wall lights add interest. The design also had to work hard; it had to be a functioning kitchen, a space for children to play and hang out, as well as a place to entertain family and friends.
Designing ample storage was also a key priority so the island is custom-made, we created built-in tall cupboards and a reading nook with bookcase.

The Drawing Room
The drawing room was designed to be relaxed and inviting – lots of different seating options, but nothing too formal. We leant into the traditional Victorian proportions and period features, like the bay window with the café curtains and the built-in joinery flanking the original fireplace. A richly earth-toned colour palette was chosen for the walls and joinery, which complements the colourway of the patterned rug. We went for a mix of finishes to create warmth and depth – lots of fabrics such as velvet and bouclé alongside warm-toned glass and brass.
We love the addition of the Italian antiques in this space, such as the green oval mirror and wall sconces. The jade green accents from the mirror makes the space feel playful yet still refined. This is also a room where we created a layered and eclectic aesthetic, combining old and new pieces is a simple way to achieve this look. For example, the new velvet sofa and the contemporary sculptured porcelain ceiling pendant sit beautifully alongside a pair of original 1970s accent chairs and coffee table.

The Dining Room
We set out to create a dining space that felt unique, glamorous and a little bit dramatic – especially in the evening. It’s full of marble, glass and metal, as well as striking shapes like the hexagonal table and thin-framed chairs. It’s full of statement design – real conversation starters – and creates a space in the evening for those more intimate, cosy dinners. We sourced an incredible chunky hexagonal, mid-century marble dining table to be a focal point and paired that with vintage chrome dining chairs. A deep burgundy velvet wall hanging dating back to the 1930s lives above a rare Italian mirrored console table.
We also wanted to define the drawing and dining room as individual spaces but at the same time keep that beautiful sense of space and flow from the front to the back of the house. Inspired by French sunrooms, we designed a bespoke glass partition to frame each space and add new visual interest. We also wanted the design to feel cohesive with other parts of the house so incorporated those subtle curves from the kitchen design. It’s actually one of our favourite features.

The Downstairs Powder Room
We love a small cloakroom – it’s somewhere you can be bold and creative with design. Here we embraced Art Deco opulence. Our client loved this printed wallpaper and we pattern drenched it with a matching fabric blind – a playful combination with maximum impact.

The Main Bedroom
We wanted to create a stylish and softly layered bedroom without veering into anything overly feminine. Like in the kitchen, the room also presented another opportunity to incorporate some bold decorative accents, such as the white fabric box pelmets, large bedside plaster mirrors and a white painted picture rail.
The room’s design feels quite sculptural and defined and this is also emphasised by the original ceiling rose and bespoke pendant we designed featuring a trio of shells – we love a more bohemian shell design. We also wanted to keep things playful so designed the bullion fringing skirt for the custom-made bed and chose bold leopard ombré stools for the foot of the bed.

The En-Suite
This room started with the floor. We struggled to find interesting off-the-shelf tiles, so we custom-designed our own elaborate checkerboard pattern featuring three types of marble: Rosso Alicante marble paired with white Carrara and Nero marble tiles. We had this incredible Art Deco-inspired vision and wanted to create a sense of theatre. This theme also inspired the hand-painted ceiling fresco by artist Emma Stevenson.
A large antique double pedestal basin sourced from France is set against a feature mirror wall, flanked by decorative wall sconces. The walk-in shower cubicle also adds to the drama – another chance to incorporate those signature artistic decorative features such as the curved arch in a black gloss finish.
One of our favourite items is the custom-designed pleated shower curtain adorned with a tassel tie-back. The pale blue theme is also incorporated here in the ornate shower tiles and Austrian window blind, which soften the bathroom’s bold design

The Boy's Bedroom
Originally a long, thin uninviting room, creating a bed nook at one end was the best decision for this space. We loved designing the cosy cabin with built-in shelves, a bookcase and fun cubby holes. We also managed to incorporate some clever storage under the bed, and the tongue and groove panelling gives it a more of an authentic rustic cabin look.
Colour drenching the walls gives it some freshness but we loved sourcing vintage fabrics, such as the one we used on the Roman blind to add a pop of colour. Finally, vintage furniture and accessories complete this room.

The Girl's Bedroom
We set out to create a dream-like, nature-inspired room for this young girl, so we opted for warm pastel shades and a whimsical print. The hand-painted wardrobe and antique chest of drawers bring imagination and artistic beauty to what was originally plain pieces of furniture, and we love the yellow pop from the bespoke mirror. It’s all very gentle and serene
