What To Watch This Week 28.07.25
MONDAY
Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time, Disney +
Two decades on, this searing docuseries revisits one of the darkest chapters in recent US history – and the political failures that made it so devastating. What began started as a natural disaster quickly exposed deep racial and structural inequalities, sparking nationwide outrage and shaking public faith in the Bush administration. Raw, emotional footage and first-hand accounts serve as a sobering reminder of how fast modern society can unravel when leadership fails. Unflinching, powerful and essential viewing.

Human, BBC Two
Neanderthals are having a bit of a moment – and rightly so, says anthropologist and stand-up Ella Al-Shamahi, who’s here to debunk a few caveman clichés. In this fascinating series, she traces the very roots of what makes us human, introducing us to an ancient cast of Homo species who once walked the Earth alongside us. This week, we learn just how closely related we really are – a recently discovered fossil suggests our ancestors might’ve been mingling with Neanderthals just a few generations back.

FRIDAY
Bring Her Back
Fresh from the team behind horror hit Talk To Me, this slow-burn shocker is already being called one of the year’s most disturbing films. Sally Hawkins (The Shape Of Water) leans into the unsettling edge that’s made her such a captivating screen presence – and critics are saying this might be her best performance yet. She plays a grieving foster mum whose newest arrivals, two orphaned siblings, begin to suspect something’s deeply wrong in her remote home. What starts as a quiet character drama quickly spirals into full-blown psychological horror, with ritualistic twists, mounting dread and a finale that’s as shocking as it is heartbreaking.

Savages
This beautifully animated stop-motion film from Claude Barras (My Life As A Courgette) made waves on the festival circuit last year – now it’s finally arriving in UK cinemas. Set in the Borneo rainforest, it follows 11-year-old Kéria who discovers an orphaned baby orangutan at the palm oil plantation where her father works. Together with her cousin, she sets out to protect the animal and save their ancestral land from destruction. With its lush visuals and powerful eco-message, Savages is a poignant and moving watch for the whole family.
