FRIDAY

Thunderbolts*

Marvel’s antihero squad finally gets its big-screen moment in Thunderbolts*, a darker, grittier take on the superhero genre. Directed by Jake Schreier (Paper Towns), the film brings together Florence Pugh (Don’t Worry Darling), Sebastian Stan (Pam & Tommy), Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and David Harbour (Stranger Things) as a misfit team of reformed villains recruited for a top-secret mission. Besides this being a Marvel release, what has set social media abuzz is Pugh’s daring stunt jump from Kuala Lumpur’s 2,722ft Merdeka 118 tower, drawing comparisons to Tom Cruise’s action feats. Fast-paced, full of morally murky moments and with the dry humour Marvel fans love, this one sets the tone for Phase 5 of the MCU. Plus, the film’s title includes an asterisk – teasing a deeper connection to the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday

Parthenope

Paolo Sorrentino, the mastermind behind The Great Beauty, returns with another love letter to Italy – this time setting his sights on sun-drenched Naples. Parthenope follows a young woman, born from the sea, as she comes of age amid the golden summers and intoxicating nights of the 1970s. It's less about plot and more about atmosphere: sweeping scenery, unforgettable characters and the restless, dizzying feeling of first love – with the city of Naples itself becoming a driving character in the story. Celeste Dalla Porta leads the cast alongside Gary Oldman in this gorgeous, sprawling tale, which made its debut at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
