There’s no doubt Jess Skye has great style. But what you may not know is that she’s packed up and moved to Cornwall – and naturally, she’s done it in the most fashionable way possible. Here, she shares her coastal style favourites, as well as where to eat and stay in her new home…

FASHION & STYLE

Coastal fashion isn't what you think. People see it as function first, fashion second – for example, comfortable shoes and technical rain jackets. But Cornwall is a creative and stylish place, and full of people who love fashion. The general vibe is relaxed, which for me means jeans, a cashmere jumper or a linen shirt and a pair of suede slides.

My style has evolved. I’ve definitely come into my own a bit more after moving. I’ve always dressed in a laid-back way (I’m an avid jeans and jumper girl) so the transition wasn’t that difficult. The only real change is I don’t wear blazers and tapered trousers anymore – unless I am going to a work event. Generally, I’ve incorporated more comfortable and informal clothing into my day-to-day wardrobe. I’m also gravitating towards more colour, which has surprised me, as I always used to dress in neutral tones.

People see it as function first, fashion second, but CORNWALL IS A CREATIVE AND STYLISH PLACE, and full of people who love fashion.

There are several smaller brands on my radar right now. Little Liffner is one – its suede bucket bags are perfect for chucking everything in. I have one in brown and another in green, and they really are my favourite thing right now – perfect with blue jeans, a crisp white tee and BirkenstocksRouri, a Spanish brand, focuses on small collections. It has wonderful linen two-pieces and lightweight linen dresses, perfect for a Mediterranean summer's day. Elsewhere, I came across Maison Hotel while talking to a friend at the hairdresser. It does beautiful, vintage bohemian-style pieces. Think floaty trousers with pretty delicate screen prints. It’s a brand I’ll be wearing lots over the summer.

There are lots of things I’d pack for a weekend in Cornwall. An oversized shirt is a must as it’s great with linen trousers or for throwing over your swimsuit. You also can't go wrong with a good-fitting pair of jeans for day and night. A chic and cosy jumper is another must-have, and make sure you’ve got a comfy pair of trainers for walking and a swimsuit or bikini on hand. As things are warming up, it helps to have another pair of everyday shoes on hand – I’ve been living in these Zara clogs. Bring an evening top for dinner, plus shorts and jumpers for the daytime. I also recommend getting your hands on a lightweight spring jacket. I always go for an oversized fit as you can layer accordingly. Finally, you’ll need a fairly large bag to carry everything in – including a beach towel. I’ve seen an amazing Loewe raffia style which you can fold, so it flattens into your weekend bag.

My Khaite Benny belt has been working extremely hard. It’s the perfect accessory to add a little punch to any outfit. I like to wear it with jeans and an oversized jumper or shirt.

I’ve definitely transitioned into my new season clothes – even if the weather isn’t screaming spring quite yet. I’ve tucked away the winter coats and am gravitating towards lightweight jackets. I can’t wait to start wearing shorts. I feel like they’re something I’ll be wearing throughout the summer. In fact, I recently purchased a pair of white COS boxer-style shorts, and they look so good with oversized knitwear and suede clogs. I’ve always worn linen throughout spring/summer and this year will be no different. ARKETH&M and Reformation always have the best line-up.

I took a mini jewellery hiatus last year. I wasn’t sure what style I wanted, so I decided to strip things back. However, since moving to Cornwall I’ve really been enjoying styling my jewellery again. I think because the style here is so chilled, wearing your favourite accessories or jewellery can really make a difference. A recent discovery is Heavenly London. I have the gold Marilyn necklace and haven’t taken it off for about a month. There are so many wonderful handmade jewellery brands here in Cornwall too and my favourite is Found Treasure. I’m also very into silver jewellery at the moment, which surprises me as I’ve always been such a gold girl.

My evening style has probably changed the most. I don’t think I’ve picked up a pair of heels in months. For a dinner in Cornwall, I generally opt for a long-sleeve plissè top, black or blue jeans and a western-style boot.

Boho is a trend I’m really into. I don’t think I’ll go full boho chic, but I do love to incorporate certain items into my wardrobe, and summer is the perfect time to try out this trend. This is probably inspired by one of my new fashion follows: I love how Angie Smith Style incorporates a bit of boho edge into her daily looks.

My style resolution this year was to wear more colour. I think deep down I’ve been afraid to wear it and I find styling neutral tones much easier. With summer now in sight, I’m making it my mission to incorporate more – from cornflower blue jumpers to berry red shirts.

I’ve definitely COME INTO MY OWN A BIT MORE AFTER MOVING. I’m also GRAVITATING TOWARDS MORE COLOUR, which has surprised me, as I always used to dress in neutral tones.

JESS’S CORNWALL RECOMMENDATIONS

Where To Eat…

BEST BREAKFAST: Farm + Fort

The coconut almond chocolate croissants are so delicious, and the breakfast bowl is top tier.

BEST LUNCH: Mackerel Sky Seafoods Bar

This is in Newlyn, and I recommend the grilled samphire, the local white fish and the scallops with Cornish dukkah – oh, and the bread.

BEST LOCAL: Duchy Grub

This is an under-the-radar spot I love. It’s a small restaurant on the north coast, serving the most incredible local food.

BEST DINNER: 45 Queen Street

The menu changes each season. I went for dinner recently and had a spring stew full of Cornish spring greens, hearty root veg and butter beans – delicious.

BEST COFFEE: Pavilion Cafe

Hands down, this place does the best coffee. It’s in Newquay and also does amazing pastries.

BEST ATMOSPHERE: The Hidden Hut

For a seaside spot, few places beat The Hidden Hut. Above a remote cove near the fishing village of Portscatho, you can enjoy the freshly cooked meals and the most incredible atmosphere.

Where To Stay…

The Artist Resident in Penzance or Watergate Bay is perfect for large groups or families. I also recommend searching for places on Kip Hideaways, Airbnb or Unique Home Stays. A few to look out for are Brook CottageArabia Cottage, SukiThe Net Loft or The Scarlet Hotel, which is an eco-sanctuary on the clifftops with sea-view rooms.

What To Do…

Try a pottery class. It’s one of the more under-the-radar things you could do while you’re there. There are lots of wonderful clay studios for beginners or intermediates. You don’t have to commit to a course – just try a morning or afternoon class.

My favourite swim spots are the hidden rock pools in Porthtowan. Another must-visit is the Rockpool cafe in Mousehole. The café overlooks one of the most spectacular rock pools – a lovely place to take a dip and watch the sunset with a warm brew. If it’s horrible weather, head to cosy Eia in St Ives – they do the best wine and nibbles.
