The Area
In the East Midlands, Stamford i s Georgian market town – think limestone buildings, picturesque pubs and rolling hills. Often overlooked, Stamford was recently named as one of the best places to live in the UK by The Sunday Times, so now everyone is in on the secret.
Straddled by the historic counties of Rutland and Lincolnshire, the area is steeped in British heritage and home to plenty of unspoilt villages with ‘chocolate box’ cottages complete with narrow cobbled passageways, a 1,000-year-old priory, thatched rooves and honey-coloured stoning. It’s so picturesque in fact, that it was used in the filming of 2005’s Pride & Prejudice, and more recently, The Crown.
What To See & Where To Go
Stamford has stayed true to its history and its snaking alleyways and courtyards are home to a variety of independent shops, jewellers, boutiques and antique shops. Plus, there are quintessential butchers, bakers and grocers for the freshest produce. Market day in the town centre isn’t to be missed.
Stamford has a blossoming food scene far beyond its modest size; tea rooms and traditional pubs are ten a penny, catering to all group sizes and occasions. For a proper old-timey – yet still luxe – meal, The George is a must for both a pint and fine dining.
No visit to the town is complete without a trip to Burghley House – a grand stately home dating back to the Elizabethan period. It welcomes visitors throughout the year; guests are welcome to book into the Orangery restaurant and take a walk around its gardens - the garden of surprises and recently opened Hide and Secrets is perfect for younger visitors and the parkland, which is still occupied by a herd of fallow deer. Ibiza at Burghley and Burghley Horse Trials play host to thousands of national and international visitors each year.
Rutland is home to England's largest reservoir, covering 3,100 acres: Rutland Water is loved by anglers - home to an internationally famous trout fishery- sailors - both enthusiasts and beginners - and cyclists, walkers and lovers of the great outdoors can explore the 25 mile circular track. Michelin Starred dining is also available on the Hambleton Pennisula overlooking the waters at Hambleton Hall which has held its Michelin Star since 1982.
Recently revamped Rutland Nurseries is also well worth a visit, with views over Rutland Water.
The surrounding villages are home to many brilliant country inns. Our favourite being The Olive Branch in Clipsham, with many accolades including Michelin Pub of the Year, Good Pub Guide Pub of the Year under its belt.
The Destination To Know
For those seeking a slower pace of life, Stamford’s properties have become increasingly sought after. Now, new private members' club Woolfox is shaking things up. Set on a 185-acre estate, this club is a haven within a haven. Previously a golf course and clubhouse, Woolfox recently underwent an extensive renovation with curated interior design and a dedication to wellness at the centre of its makeover.
Wellness
Woolfox has all the facilities of a big city gym with a countryside atmosphere. The luxe club aims to provide the best facilities for its members across the board. It comes fully equipped with a 20m indoor swimming pool, complete with floor-to-ceiling views. The poolside sauna and relaxation room can help you further unwind after your morning swim.
Elsewhere, there are all your favourite classes – yoga, Pilates and more are all available in the state-of-the-art studio, in both group sessions and one-on-ones for a more tailored experience. And, if group sports are more your thing, there are Padel tennis facilities available, too.
Woolfox’s golf course is one of the most scenic in the area; it’s an 18-hole course set over 180 acres – complete with a ten-bay covered driving range and beautiful lakes. Looking to perfect your swing? PGA professionals are on hand for coaching sessions.
Food & Drink
Woolfox offers a 360° approach, which means its dining options are key to the overall experience. The Woolfox cafe is open to the public, as well as members, and serves food seven days a week – ideal for a post-workout refuel. Guests can expect healthy dishes that don’t compromise on taste, as well as more indulgent dishes such as the Woolfox Fry– featuring locally sourced sausages, of course. There’s also a smoothies, juices and shots menu. Finally, another dining option is The Members Lounge, a dedicated space in which to enjoy coffees and pastries while overlooking the rural landscape. This summer sees an array of activities from renowned kids club, Tarka London in residence, alongside street food vans, stone fired pizza, Pomello cocktails and live music on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the summer.
The Homes
Woolfox has proven very popular – membership is full at the moment – but it’s worth noting that the group has a number of residences available if you’re considering making the move or looking for a second home. On offer are four- and five-bedroom homes within the estate, looking over the lakes and golf course and within easy reach of the club’s facilities.
Woolfox residences have been constructed using UK larch and Stamford stone – the same honey-coloured masonry you see in the old town. The holiday homes – available to buy or rent – have a muted English countryside vibe, with all the modern amenities you might want. The Location
