8 UK Boutique Hotels Under £100

With staycations on the rise, holidaying at home in the UK is officially cool again – with a raft of boutique boltholes offering everything from luxurious décor and sweeping views to award-winning fine-dining, cookery classes and beachside spas. And they don’t all break the budget – here are eight SL-approved hotels under £100-per-night…

Albion House, Ramsgate

Just a six-minute walk from Ramsgate beach – the closest sandy beach to London – and a hillside location overlooking the Royal Harbour, Albion House is the perfect spot for a seaside break. It’s a hotel with a long history of royal guests, and many of the buildings original Georgian features still remain – carefully restored during a 2014 refurbishment. Out of 14 rooms, 12 boast direct sea views – we recommend booking into the Little Victoria Room (where Princess Victoria recuperated in 1835), which boasts a posh super-king size bed, sumptuous marble bathroom and Regency balcony facing the harbour – the ideal spot for catching the sunset.

Widbrok Grange, Bradford-on-Avon

Fancy a countryside escape? Built in the 18th-century on 11 acres of land, this is the place to do the Cotswolds without all the crowds. Fresh and inviting with a touch of country chic, the 19 boutique bedrooms are decked out in relaxing colour palettes, and feature luxe touches like 400-threat Egyptian cotton sheets, goose down feather duvets and top-quality mattresses. The hotel’s restaurant, The Kitchen – offering traditional farmhouse cuisine with a gastro twist – and Gin Bar – serving up over 150 craft and award-winning gins – are also well worth a visit (trust us, you’ll want to Instagram everything).

Artist Residence, Penzance

Bringing a slice of the Artist Residence’s signature eccentric charm to the dreamy Cornish town, this 22-room hotel (plus a cosy 3-room cottage for families or groups) is ideally situated for seaside strolls and exploring the restaurants and bars of Penzance town centre. The bedrooms are designed to be like homes-away-from-home, and are decorated in the hotel group’s typical eclectic fashion – think unique furnishings, limited edition art prints and the comfiest beds around. The Georgian building is also home to three bars and restaurants – we recommend heading to the Bar & Lounge to sip on a Cornish cider in front of the roaring open fire after a day of exploring.

The Gallivant, East Sussex

Down by the dunes of Camber Sands, The Gallivant is a motel-turned-sophisticated seaside hotel with cosy cabin-style rooms, a gorgeous manicured garden complete with Beach Hut spa (the Karma De-Stress massage is absolute heaven), and award-winning south-coast dining: think fresh local fish on the à la carte and a breakfast bloody mary station. We’re big fans of the Luxury Garden Rooms – with a quiet, leafy seating area and rolltop bathtub big enough for two – and the Deck Rooms – featuring Hamptons-esque interiors and secluded terraces.

The Queensbury, Bath

One of the most beautiful hotels in bath, The Queensbury seamlessly merges old-fashioned attitudes to service and detail with sophisticated, modern comfort. All 29 rooms are individually designed, some boasting grand four-poster beds and saloon-doored bathrooms, others original Georgian plasterwork and ornate fireplaces. With Head Chef Chris Cleghorn (protégé of Heston Blumenthal, Michael Caines and Adam Simmonds) at the helm, the hotel’s 3 AA rosette Olive Tree restaurant is a must-book – expect inventive dishes, including the likes of duck liver with toffee apple purée, and truffled confit chicken with sweetcorn and chicory.

The Talbot Inn, Frome

Dating back to the 15th century, this converted coach house has the same acclaimed gastropub credentials as its sister, the Beckford Arms. Rooms are laid-back, with a luxurious feel – the larger rooms have freestanding baths and emperor beds, but even the smaller options are gorgeous, with Berber-style rugs, soft sofas and log-filled fireplaces. The hotel has its own bar filled with local ales, and two restaurants serving classic Brit fare (venison loin, Cornish pollock, buttermilk pudding with rhubarb, and the like), with an emphasis on ingredients that have been grown, cured or smoked on-site.

Located in the heart of Edinburgh, this hotel-cum-restaurant-cum bar is one of the coolest spots to stay in the city (yet don’t be fooled by its hipster credentials, the vibe here is relaxed and chilled out). Upstairs, above the glass-roofed garden, you’ll find ten comfortable bedrooms with minimalist Pinterest-worthy interiors – 70s-style mirrors, plants and chic neutral textiles all feature – whilst the ground floor is is also home to Edinburgh’s first ‘low and slow’ taphouse; serving unpasteurised craft beer from copper tanks, plus locally-sourced meat and fish slow-cooked over the restaurant’s own white oak charcoal fire pit.
