Bulgari Hotel

Bulgari is the storied Italian fashion house whose latest chapter sees it growing a portfolio of ultra-luxe hotels around the world. Opened in 2023, Bulgari Hotel Tokyo is a suitably sparkling proposition, offering sky-high views, exceptional dining and one of the city’s best spas. Here’s what to expect from a stay.

THE HOTEL

Bulgari Hotel Tokyo is spread across the top six floors of a skyscraper in Tokyo’s newly developed Yaesu district. The hotel itself is partly hidden from view, in keeping with the group’s commitment to privacy and discretion. On arrival, guests are taken to a reception area that leads onto a grand entrance way. The group’s Italian architect is behind the striking design: doors are concealed, archways are made from Italian and Japanese marble, and soft colours are complemented by clever lighting. The sheer scale of the property is seriously impressive, especially in a city where space is a considerable luxury.

THE ROOMS

Stepping into one of the 98 rooms and suites, the first thing you’ll notice is the view from the floor-to-ceiling windows. Guests can literally wake up in the clouds – or you might get views over Yaesu and all the way to Tokyo Bay and even Mt Fuji. There are three sizes of room (with options for groups and families) and several types of suite, up to the 400sq m Bulgari Suite. Both rooms and suites have contemporary yet cosy interiors with Italian details and locally made soft furnishings. Tasteful pops of orange bring warmth, while sumptuous beds are supremely comfortable. Order your preferred pillow from the menu and ask the concierge team to have your room ready with your favourite drinks or snacks.

Bathrooms are accessed through sliding doors inspired by typical Japanese houses. Each one has granite tiling, ultra-modern toilets (one of the many feats of modern Japanese tech) and branded toiletries. During the turn-down service you’ll be given snacks and a flask of organic tea to help you sleep.

THE FOOD

The destination Il Ristorante sits on the 40th floor with a striking dining room. It’s held a Michelin star since it opened, thanks in large part to an inventive menu created by chef Niko Romito. A master of recreating Italian dishes with Japanese ingredients, his crowd-pleasing yet elegant offering here features classics like spaghetti vongole and veal Milanese.

Sushi Hōseki is headed up by another master of his craft, Takuro Shimizu. The single table here seats just eight, where you can enjoy handrolls, sashimi and sake from its extensive list. Elsewhere, the Bulgari Bar has been designed to mirror a historical Italian garden with lush greenery and dim lighting to set the mood. Guests can order from a small menu created by chef Niko – or take a champagne afternoon tea on the terrace that spills out from the light-filled lounge.

THE SPA

The palatial spa might be the most impressive part of the hotel. The atmosphere is as serene as you’d expect, with relaxed staff leading you from reception to wood-panelled changing rooms stocked exclusively with Augustinus Bader products. The 40th-floor ‘aerie’ is home to a 25m indoor pool with skyline views, a thermal pool and a hot/cold experience with ice. When you’re done, recline on one of the loungers inside the spa or out on the terrace.

Guests can choose from facials, massages and full-body treatments using Augustinus Bader products, as well as ayurvedic treatments with Mauli oils and more – think crystal massages and healing chakra rituals. You can even book shared private experiences in the spa suite, which is home to side-by-side treatment beds, a hammam and an oversized hydro massage tub cladded in Iranian onyx.

THE EXTRAS

As you’d expect, the service is flawless, with friendly and attentive staff who go above and beyond to ensure you have a memorable stay. The team can book excursions and experiences around the city and beyond, including art tours of contemporary galleries, excursions to the iconic Toyosu Central Market and personal shopping trips. You’ll also find some of the brand’s beautiful jewellery dotted around the hotel, all of which is available to buy.

THE VERDICT

One of the city’s most architecturally stunning properties, Bulgari Hotel Tokyo more than lives up to its ultra-luxe credentials. It’s a hotel to splash out on, if only for a night, in the most populous city on the planet. Away from the traditional ryokans and capsule hotels, it’s a glamorous alternative where everything is designed for maximum comfort and convenience. Pair that with an enviable location and panoramic views, and you have a true bucket-list property.
