A Cool Model, Writer & Filmmaker Talks Favourite Movies, Playlists & More

Mariah Idrissi has never been one to follow the crowd. In 2015, she made headlines as the world’s first hijab-wearing model fronting a global campaign for H&M and since then, the London-born creative has built a career spanning modelling, writing, filmmaking and public speaking. Today, she runs her own production company, Blue City Films, which is dedicated to telling authentic stories that shine a light on global artisans and underrepresented communities. From nostalgic comfort films to cinematic playlists, here’s everything Mariah’s been downloading lately…

What was your last in-flight watch?

I never download a film for a long flight — I prefer seeing what the airline has to offer. It feels like rare, uninterrupted time to catch up on movies I’ve missed. On my last flight back from Dubai, I watched Fly Me To The Moon. I’d missed it in the cinema but really enjoyed it, partly because I love Scarlett Johansson, and partly because I didn’t expect something so NASA-focused to feel so relatable to the work I do.

A recent binge-watch?

I devoured The Residence in 48 hours. I love a good murder mystery and this one felt refreshing because the detective was a Black woman – it felt like a different perspective for the genre. Right now, I’m eagerly waiting for Wednesday to drop.

Which series do you return to time and again?

I don’t usually rewatch shows – there’s too much choice out there. But when I do, it’s often history-focused or something on Nat Geo. I’ve rewatched Graham Hancock’s Ancient Apocalypse a couple of times because I made my mum and husband watch it too. I like how he challenges established theories and builds his own arguments. For scripted series, I’d happily revisit The Mandalorian or Dune: Prophecy – especially the latter, as I’m working on a film project and find it inspiring for research.

What’s your definition of comfort TV?

The Prince of Egypt is pure nostalgia for me – and the songs are incredible. In general, I’ll turn to animated or adventure films when I want comfort: Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park are favourites.

What was the first book you downloaded this year – and did you finish it?

I’m a bit old school – I prefer physical books. The first book I picked up this year was Big Panda And Little Dragon, which is such a beautiful book for both adults and children. I’ve read it before, and it’s one you can dip in and out of. In terms of adult reads, I started Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long And Happy Life, but I blame London traffic, social media editing and constant WhatsApps for stealing my reading time!

Have you read a ‘pleasant surprise’ book?

I’m currently reading Trading In The Zone by Mark Douglas, as I’ve recently started trading. I was surprised by how similar the psychological journey is to other creative or entrepreneurial pursuits. I’m also reading Britain and Barbary 1589-1689 by Nabil Matar – heaven for a history nerd like me. I studied English literature and history because I’ve always wanted to write stories rooted in our past. For me, history is both escapism and essential knowledge. That’s why I often choose non-fiction over fiction – I already watch plenty of films, so I like my reading to feel more educational.

What’s next on your list?

I keep meaning to finish The Laws of Human Nature by Robert Greene. I’ve started and stopped so many times that I probably need to go back to the beginning – but I can tell it’s a brilliant book.

What’s the most-played album in your downloads right now?

I’m writing a script for a feature film, so I’ve been listening to a lot of cinematic music and gnawa (traditional Moroccan music). It’s not really an album but a playlist I go back to a lot. Music often sparks entire storylines for me – one track, ‘Solomon Vandy’ by James Newton Howard, inspired a whole scene. It makes me feel like I’m back in a remote part of East Africa, which reminds me of my travels for humanitarian work.

Any throwback tracks or playlists you always keep downloaded, just in case?

Definitely late 90s and early 2000s R&B and hip-hop. One track I always keep is Aaliyah’s ‘Don’t Know What To Tell Ya’. It takes me straight back to being a teenager, driving around with my cousin late at night, blasting music in the car.

What was the last podcast you downloaded and would you recommend it?

I really enjoy The Ansari Podcast – it’s great for topical conversations through an Islamic lens. I also dip into The Diary Of A CEO almost every other day, especially to keep up with developments in AI.

Any niche or unexpected music downloads we wouldn’t expect from you?

‘The Chain’ by Fleetwood Mac. It was a favourite of my dad’s and uncles – even though it came out long before I was born. I’d actually forgotten about it until I heard it at a London Fashion Week show, and it instantly brought back memories of my dad playing it loudly in the kitchen.

Do you ever download content for offline moments or are you more of a stream-on-the-go person?

Definitely stream-on-the-go. I travel so much that just keeping up with packing and unpacking is a task in itself, so I don’t overthink entertainment for the journey – I just go with the flow.

Are you someone who clears your downloads regularly, or is it a graveyard of good intentions?

My phone is definitely a graveyard – but my laptop is neat and organised. I really need to work on clearing my phone, though; it’s mainly clogged with endless photos and videos I still need to sort through.
