NET-A-PORTER’s Global Beauty Director, Newby Hands, Shares Her Beauty Dozen

After almost 30 years in the beauty industry, it’s safe to say Newby Hands is the ultimate beauty insider. Now as global beauty director at NET-A-PORTER, she pretty much knows everything there is to know about ingredients, formulations and the products worth investing in. We quizzed her on her favourite mascara of all time, her beauty travel tips and discover the brand she’s been retuning to for over 15 years.

For brows...

I switch between Jenna Treat at Josh Wood’s hair salon and Blink Brow Bar for shaping and tinting. For DIY, I recently started using the Amy Jean range I love how she really thought through how to make doing brows easy for real women.

For nail treatments...

For nails I’ll either go to Townhouse or DryBy in central London – both do brilliant manis and pedis.

For travel...

I always take the Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax oil in a roller ball – it’s the best thing for jet lag; Joanna Vargas sheet masks (for the mini bar) she does one for every skin care occasion; Joanna Czech Face Roller – it actually lifts up the muscles and drains the face – I use it over a sheet mask to get rid of a puffy post-flight face; re-hydration powders because they give me energy and are a better alternative to raiding the chocolate in the mini bar; Legology Air-Lite, is great for in-flight and post flight as it stops legs feeling heavy – I use it from the chin down as it smells great and minimises water retention.

Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax Roller Ball, £18
Joanna Vargas Forever Glow Anti-Aging Face Mask x5, £60
Joanna Czech Facial Massager, £178
Legology Air-Lite Daily Lift For Legs, £48

For fragrance...

Tom Ford Soleil Blanc – I wear it summer and winter.

Tom Ford Private Blend Soleil Blanc Eau de Parfum, £238

For lips...

My life’s make up mission has been to find the perfect nude lipstick and so far, Charlotte Tilbury’s Penelope Pink, Gucci’s Hold Your Man and Christian Louboutin Delicanodo are my current winners. Most are too beige or brown which look flat and ‘dead’ on most skin tones.

Gucci Beauty Rouge à Lèvres Voile in Hold Your Man, £34
Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Penelope Pink, £24
Christian Louboutin Silky Satin Lip Colour in Delicanodo, £70

For extra radiance...

I am obsessed with Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter because it just makes skin look incredible. I use it on its own, under base, mixed into base or over base, and it always makes skin look dewy and glowing – never shimmery or glittery. I also love the new Gucci Westman Highlight stick – it makes the skin look naturally polished and glow-y.

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter, £30
Westman Atelier Lit Up Highlighter Stick, £37

For skin...

I’m not a big fan of double cleansing as I prefer to just do one proper cleanse. For my dry skin, I love a balm or cream and I’m currently using Omorovicza’s Cashmere Cleanser. It takes everything off but leaves my skin feeling so soft. Also, I am a late convert to eye creams, but the Dr Sebagh Supreme Eye Serum has a chilly roller ball applicator that’s just brilliant.

Omorovicza Cashmere Cleanser, £49
Dr. Sebagh Supreme Eye Serum, £95

For base...

Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish – Carissa, the founder of Hourglass, told me she wanted a base that was like real skin only much, much better and this is it.

Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Liquid Foundation, £51

For multitasking...

Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair. I must have now used it for well over 15 years – it’s super hydrating. While it’s not officially a multitasker I use it on bites and burns, it’s also great applied overnight on sunburn. I use it over makeup to freshen it and I layer it on like a mask to really saturate my skin before an evening out.

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair, £53

For self care...

I try to have massage or reflexology but have failed over the last few months. I am planning to have a course of Reiki treatments as soon as I can find a great practitioner.  For me getting outside – ideally by the sea or in woods – is the best self-care so I try to do as at often as I can.

For eyes...

My favourite mascara of all time is Charlotte Tilbury’s Legendary Mascara Volume II.

Charlotte Tilbury Legendary Lashes Volume 2 Mascara, £25

For summer beauty...

Sarah Chapman’s Skinesis Skin Insurance is a great city skin protector so I always use this in the summer months. I also love the La Mer cream but in the lighter lotion. Plus, come summer, I always make sure I keep serums, sheet masks and face rollers in the fridge on the top shelf.

Sarah Chapman Skinesis Skin Insurance SPF 30, £52
La Mer The Moisturizing Soft Lotion, £190
