Tailor It To You
“Post-pandemic, it’s understandable we want to have fun with our make-up. It’s why this eye make-up look has taken off again – it’s fun, but it doesn’t have to be intimidating. You can always find ways to make the trend to work for you.” – Cat Parnell
“This year, it’s very much a ‘Studio 54 Disco’ look, but it doesn’t have to be too full on. A touch of metallic shimmer on the inner corners of your eye, or even your cheeks, is a simple way to incorporate the trend into your look.” – Levi-Jade Taylor
Look At Your Eye Shape
“Before you go in with any glitter or metallic tones, think about what tends to suit your eyes when you create a normal smokey eye. Do you prefer a rounded shape, where the colour is on the top and bottom? Or do you like to create more of a feline effect? When you know what works for you, then you can apply your glitter tones in a similar way to ensure it flatters your face shape.” – Cat
Perfect Your Placement
“In my opinion, it’s best to avoid applying metallic shades in the crease of your eyelid. That’s where you want to apply matte shades to create definition and help the glitter on the centre of the lid really stand out. Use a highlighter at the inner and outer corners for extra sparkle and to create a widening effect – this is flattering on all eye shapes, regardless of whether you’re going for something more intense on the lids. You can also place a small amount in the centre of your eye, or on the brow bone to create more luminosity. The highlighter reflects light, drawing attention to the eyes and making them look more luminous overall.” – Levi
Don’t Overthink It
“The key thing with this look is to have fun with it. That said, if you want to ramp up your eye colour, there are certain metallic tones that will enhance them. For blue eyes, try gold shades, while green eyes can get away with jewel-toned purples and pinks. Brown eyes can use any shade – but something bright is best for party season. Finally, silver and gold works well across the board – just be sure to go for tones that complement your skin colour and don’t wash you out.” – Cat
Use The Right Products
“There are so many good products out there – one being Urban Decay’s Space Cowboy Moondust Shadow. It is the perfect combination of silver and gold, with just enough shimmer to enhance the eye. As for palettes, Makeup By Mario’s Metallic Eye Palette has such an amazing variety of shades to play with.” – Levi
“For this look, it’s better to use cream shadows first, then powder to set everything in place. This ensures it will last all night. I love M·A·C’s Dazzleshadow Liquid in ‘Stars in The Eyes’. It’s the kind of silver that suits everyone. Pat McGrath also has some amazing, pigmented shadows that have been designed to reflect the light, like the Mothership 1 palette, which has the most beautiful tones. Finally, you can’t go wrong with Hourglass’s Scattered Light Eyeshadows. Use your ring finger to dab these on and you’re done.” – Cat
Play With Light & Dark
“Disco eyes look even better when you layer different textures and tones onto one another – it creates better dimension. Apply darker matte shadows into the crease of your lids and place your lighter, shimmer tones where the light hits you – usually this is the middle of the lids, cheekbones or your brow bone. I like to add a soft shimmer onto the lid, then top it with a glitter-packed shadow on the high points of the eye for a shine that is impactful, but not Tin Man-esque. It’s all about placement and ensuring you strike the right balance.” – Levi
Try A Primer
“If you’re doing a disco eye, make sure it’s the first step of your make-up routine as inevitably, excess product will fall onto your cheeks – something make-up artists often refer to as ‘fallout’. It’s easier to sweep this away when you apply your foundation later. My final tip is to always use an eye primer. Lots of us forget this step but they are essential when you’re using glitters and metallic tones as they help the product last longer – they also enhance the intensity of the shades used. If you think about it, we have so many different tones on our eye lids, so we need to create a blank canvas for the product to really show up. Try using a primer that is almost one shade lighter than your skin tone, so that when you put your glitter on, it'll be even more vibrant. The NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base is my favourite.” – Cat
Layer Up With Setting Spray
“Setting spray won’t just enhance the longevity of your look, but also the intensity. Try misting your applicator brush to help the product glow even more – I always use Urban Decay’s Setting Spray. This works particularly well with powders. I love the Sleek Highlighter Palettes as they’re very affordable and the pigment pay-off is good. If you’re after something more luxurious, Dior’s Highlighter Palettes come in an amazing range of metallic colours so you can experiment with different tones and accentuate your individual eye colour. Likewise, the Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Palette of Pearls in ‘Celestial Pearls’ is incredible. All the shades are perfect for Christmas parties.” – Levi
