Make-Up Artist Violette Shares Her Little Black Beauty Book
For A Haircut…
Believe it or not, I don’t get my hair done, I cut it myself. Yannick D’Is is the one who first cut my hair into shape and framed my bangs, but he told me to continue cutting it myself so it felt messy and creative. I stole the pocket knife off my boyfriend and I cut my hair with it – since then I have upgraded to a proper pair of hair cutting scissors, which you can get everywhere. Amazon have some great, professional options.
For Colour & Highlights…
My hair vibe is low-key with subtle hints of colour. To maintain it, I go to Alissa Frum, who works at Blackstones in Tribeca. She’s the only person I’ve ever let colour my hair – no one else is allowed to touch it.
For Hair Styling…
Bumble & Bumble’s Thickening Dry Spun Finish Spray is a firm favourite of mine. It keeps the shape of your hair with no stickiness, but adds beautiful texture. I put it at the centre and on the roots of my hair, then I pinch it up a lot. Another hair hack I use is to put a little clip onto my bangs to give them more lift and keep them more in the centre – for that real 70s vibe.
Thickening Dryspun Texture Spray, £22 | Bumble And Bumble
For Shampoo & Conditioner…
I love Aveda – their formulas are so gentle and don’t leave behind sticky residue, or leave my strands feeling lank. They give a thorough clean and keep hair shiny, too.
Nutriplenish™ Shampoo Light Moisture, £25 | Aveda
For An Instant Glow…
The new Estée Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue base is honestly one of my favourite foundations – I’m not just saying that. It keeps skin so glowy, even and healthy-looking, while the added SPF45 is a huge bonus – you can take it right up to your eyes too for extra protection. The best bit? It’s so sheer it feels just like skin, and it's never cakey or thick.
Futurist Hydra Rescue Moisturising Makeup, £32.40 | Estée Lauder
For Plump Skin…
At-home facials are my thing, especially right now, and Biologique’s Recherche Masque Vivant is a staple in my kit. It uses AHAs to gently unclog dirty pores, regulate oil secretion and tighten skin for a smoother surface. It’s ideal if you suffer from spots or oiliness. I’m also loving the new Glow Recipe Avocado Melt Retinol Eye Sleeping Mask – kind to skin, but full of hydration, it visibly boosts luminosity.
Masque Vivant, $245 | Biologique Recherché
For A Quick Skin Fix…
Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Serum is a must-have for me. I don’t really believe in anti-ageing beauty products, but I do think a good serum and moisturiser is key, and all you really need in terms of preventative measures. I use this every single day post-cleanse and frequently tap it on top of make-up as well to refresh everything and build a subtle highlight. Sometimes I’ll scrunch some through my hair, too, to give it extra nourishment.
Advanced Night Repair, £66.30 (was £78) | Estée Lauder
For Red Lips…
Poppy Sauvage is the ultimate red lipstick for me. Rich and full-bodied in pigment, it’s easy to wear, suits most skin tones and instantly boosts any look. I am never without one.
Pure Color Envy Paint-On Liquid Lip Color in Poppy Sauvage, £27 | Estée Lauder
For Bushy Brows…
Jimena Garcia is the best for brows – no question. She is the only one that I ever allow to touch mine and she is loved by so many industry insiders. I highly recommend you seek her out if you’re ever in New York. She’s doing virtual brow consultations right now through her site due to the lockdown. So worth it.

For Fragrance…
This is called Baisers de Jasmin in collaboration with In Fiore and it’s my number one fragrance. It reminds me of summers in the south of France – a beautiful mix of vanilla and jasmine. The compact it comes in makes it ideal for on-the-go, too.
