The Beauty Insider: Waterproof Makeup

Every fortnight, make-up artist Lisa Potter-Dixon shares her tips and tricks on what’s new, what’s cult and what you really need to know in the world of beauty. Right now, she’s talking about water-resistant formulas that will help keep your look fresh through summer…

There’s been many so-called waterproof formulas that I’ve tested that have ended up half way down my face within the hour. I’m still a bit gutted that the ‘panda eye’ hasn’t caught on as a trend, it would make our lives so much easier.

With the hope of a warm British summer ahead (a girl can dream!) I’ve been trying and testing multiple products to see which ones actually delivered on their claims and stood the test of time.

So, here are my winners from each category, to ensure your makeup stays put, whatever the weather.

Foundation

Ultrasun Skin Tint SPF50

This is the perfect combination of SPF protection with a tinted moisturizer vibe. It gives your complexion a healthy glow and light coverage, and it stays put. Win, win!

Shiseido UV Protection Liquid Foundation

This is brilliant for a long lasting, natural finish. Once it’s on the skin it never becomes sticky, which is one of my pet hates of wearing makeup in humidity.

Concealer

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Full Coverage Waterproof Concealer

In my opinion, this is one of the best concealers on the planet to wear in the  heat. It gives great coverage and brightens the eye area. Depending on the look I’m going for, I’ll occasionally apply this on other areas or the face, using a damp beauty blender, for all over, even coverage.

NYX Gotcha Covered Concealer

If you want a light to medium concealer with a dewy finish, this is the one for you. It’s super affordable and won’t budge, even during the most humid days.

Brows

Sometimes, a well-groomed eyebrow is all you need on holiday. My absolute top tip is to get them waxed and tinted before you go away. Eye lash tints are also pretty epic. However, if you do want to fill in any sparse areas, try Benefits Precisely my brow pencil. It’s waterproof and has an ultra-fine tip meaning you can create realistic, hair like strokes.

Blush

Daniel Sandler Water Coloured Liquid Blush

I adore these blushers. Not only do they blend flawlessly into the skin, but they’re buildable too. In the sun our skin obviously heats up, meaning we get a natural flush of colour. So, adding something subtle like this blush, gives a little something extra without being overpowering.

Stila Aqua Glow Waterproof Blush

The water-based formula actually cools your skin as you apply it. Dreamy if you do your makeup on your commute. It’s buildable and does not budge. No matter how many laps (to the hotel bar), you decide to do.

Eye Make-up

Right, you can stop worrying about your eye makeup budging from this day forward as the only product you need is this. The Makeup Forever Aqua Seal that locks in place any eyeshadow or eyeliner. Just apply a small amount of the translucent liquid over the top of your eye make-up, let it dry and voila, that’s it. It’s also brilliant over eyeliner. If you have hooded eyes and always get the dreaded liner transfer, this product will be a game changer for you.

Mascara

Maybelline Collosol Big Shot

You can go for a long swim, sit in a sauna and then hit the dance floor and still guarantee this mascara will not move. On top of that, it’s also a bloody great mascara that separates the lashes and adds a good amount of volume.

Eyeko Sport Mascara

Labeled as a ‘sport mascara’ because you can literally run a marathon or do a hot yoga class without this baby budging. The curved wand helps you get lift from root to tip, whilst coating every lash evenly.

Lips

For me, waterproof lipsticks or liquid lipsticks are just too drying in the sun. I prefer to use a lip tint followed by an SPF Balm. My fave tint is Benefit Cha Cha Tint this gives a gorgeous pop of coral. And it doesn’t move an inch. I wore this on my wedding day. Followed by the Base Lip Balm. I also adore the Revlon Balm Stains. These are hydrating and come in an array of summery colours.

Setting Sprays

If you’d prefer to stick with your everyday makeup, then you can give a setting spray a go. These help to lock in your makeup. In my opinion, the all-time best is the cult classic, Urban Decay All-Nighter. It really works to stop your makeup from melting. Once your makeup is complete, spray all over your face then let it dry. Job done.

So, there you have it, my tried and tested, best of the best, waterproof products. The days of patchy makeup and smudged mascara are gone!

Love & long-lasting lashes,
