The Beauty Insider: List Potter Dixon’s Beauty Rules

Saying the word ‘primer’ five or six years ago probably only referred to something you put on the walls before paint. Makeup primers weren’t really a thing back then, but now it seems as though almost every beauty brand out there has one in its range. It’s true, primers are a great way to create an even base ready for makeup, so here are the main things to know…

Remember, your makeup won’t sit right if you don’t prep your skin correctly. Failing to do so will only result in a patchy base that won’t last. I always put my skincare on about 10 minutes before I put on my makeup to give it time to sink in - particularly important if you use any kind of facial oil.

After that’s done, the first product you apply should be your primer. Less tends to be more, and a pea-sized amount should be enough for the whole face. But before you do, it’s important to know there are a few different types of primer on the market. Each does something different, so be sure to pick one for your skin type or desired result.

Brightening

This is my favourite type of primer – great if your skin is looking dull, if you’re tired, or if you want a dewy finish, but not if you have an oily skin type or large pores. Some of my favourites are…

Victoria Beckham x Augustinus Bader Cell Rejuvenating Brightening Primer
This new launch was inspired by Victoria’s glowing skin, and is formulated with Bader’s iconic TFC8 technology to help with the skin’s regenerative process. This hybrid skincare and makeup product is honestly incredible. If you love glowing skin, it really makes a difference.

Becca Backlight Primer
A summer go-to for that ‘lit from within’ look. It also gives you a soft-focus finish for beautiful, flawless looking skin. I also love using it down the centre of my legs in the warmer weather.

MAC Strobe Cream
This multi-use, iconic primer is in most makeup artist’s kits. It instantly brightens and nourishes your complexion. I also love patting this on my cheekbones after makeup for an extra glow.

Mattifying

A lot of people love a matte finish, which is great if you have oily skin or large pores – but those with dry skin should try to steer clear. Some of the best out there include...

Benefit Porefessional
This silicone-based primer is good at minimising the appearance of pores and for taking away excess oil. It can also be used over makeup as an alternative to powder. Just pat on any shiny areas throughout the day.

Bobbi Brown Primer Plus Mattifyer
This extremely lightweight primer controls oil and blurs pores. But rather than give a flat finish to the face, it offers an even, matte look.

Revolution Pro Matte Primer
This is a clear gel primer that takes away any shine. And for the price point, it’s really great.

Colour Correcting

This one is great for correcting an uneven complexion or if you suffer from rosacea, pigmentation or dark spots. Those blessed with a fairly even complexion might find it an unnecessary step. Look to these ones in particular...

Stila One Step Correct
This beauty contains three colour-correct brighteners; green to minimise redness, lavender to counteract sallow undertones and peach to brighten skin while diminishing the appearance of sun spots.

Clinique Super Primer
This one corrects a range of concerns, and blends smoothly and evenly onto the face.

Vichy Derma Blend Colour Corrector
These little pots come in a variety of shades designed for different dilemmas. Use under foundation if you suffer from serious redness, pigmentation or dark spots, and blend on the affected areas before the rest of your makeup.

Until next time,

Love & lipstick,

Lisa xx
