Georgia Day’s Spring Fragrance Picks

I love rhubarb, so it’s hardly surprising that the latest fragrance I’ve fallen for focuses on this note. The scent in question is the latest seasonal release from Ffern, a small-batch fragrance brand hailing from Somerset that formulates its products using sustainably sourced, organic ingredients. For the spring equinox release, rhubarb takes centre stage and is accompanied by a host of notes including bitter orange, grapefruit rind, red cedar and vetiver root. The result is green and earthy, but with a tartness that’s refreshing, juicy and bright.

What do you get when you cross the legacy of a beauty legend like Estée Lauder with the maverick genius of contemporary perfumer Frédéric Malle? The answer is five reimagined fragrances that are both evocative and familiar, exciting and unique. While they all have their own particular allure, for spring I can’t wait to wear Private Collection Legacy, which is about as bright and bold as you can get, thanks to a herbal green accord of basil, tarragon and galbanum. That said, if you also love soft florals like I do, there is so much to love here, with rose and jasmine sambac adding elegance and refinement. Finally, sandalwood, oak moss and musk provide a lingering warmth.

I loved the concept of these clever little oils when I first saw them, and I am happy to say the scents don’t disappoint. First up is the fragrance itself, which is rich and woody thanks to bergamot, black pepper and coriander seeds. In other words, if you like green, smoky and sexy vetiver scents, you will love this. And now the formula, which is a silky oil that can be dropped delicately onto pulse points for a deep hit that also lasts really well. Not only is it perfect for dropping into your bag, it’s ideal for travel if you hate the hassle of taking clunky bottles away with you. I like this on its own, but it also layers well with more traditional springtime florals.

This is quite possibly the most expensive fragrance I’ve ever worn, but also one of the most beautiful. Crafted by the purveyors of timeless Italian elegance at Fornasetti, it is a truly special scent. While it may not be stereotypically spring-like at first whiff, with its woody heart notes and rich base notes of oak wood and tonka bean, a top trio of lavender, thyme and geranium give it a bright, spicy, aromatic quality that I cannot wait to scent balmy spring evenings with. While there’s no getting away from the price tag, I will say that the multifaceted juice and elegantly crafted bottle make it feel like a work of art.

It’s everything I love in a scent that ushers in a seasonal shift – in this case, orange oil, bergamot and warming star anise make it perfect for those first rays of spring sunshine. A grown-up fruity-floral hybrid that’s bright and fresh on the skin and totally evocative of sunny, happy holidays.
