Interior Designers Share Their Dream Bedroom Schemes

In this series, we ask leading interior designers to put together a moodboard of their dream schemes for different rooms in the house. This time, we asked them to tackle the main bedroom – a personal sanctuary which reflects your personal style. Here’s what they came up with…

This bedroom is a calming and tranquil escape after a long day. By working with a neutral colour palette, we can play with eclectic furniture and layer up other textures, such as the Pierre Frey ‘Suzette’ wallpaper. The De La Espada bed gives a custom feel to the space and is subtly contrasted by more contemporary pieces. To create balance, we focused on the fundamentals of design – prioritising comfort and relaxation, while also offering a visual connection to nature, greenery and natural materials. Lighting is one of the most crucial elements in a bedroom and we love these fittings from Naomi Paul, as they really add a softness and complement the alabaster table lamp from Collier Webb. The mix of feminine and masculine comes from the range of shapes and materials, while a vintage armchair adds personality and flair.

A bedroom should be full of layers, textures, beautiful shapes and interesting furniture. It should be a room in which you can truly switch off. This bedroom scheme is cosy and quirky – the beautiful Pierre Frey wallpaper is paired with vintage pieces and a soft handwoven rug by Coral & Hive. The curved headboard with its contrast piping creates the perfect backdrop for the handmade vintage Kantha quilt, cushions and throw. We always enjoy designing rooms with a true mix of antiques and handmade pieces.

Here’s a bedroom scheme that feels luxurious, cosy and romantic. A large emperor bed upholstered in Rose Uniacke’s ‘Burnt Sienna’ velvet takes centre stage, albeit punctuated by a pair of lacquered burr bedside tables and aged brass lamps. The Soane rattan pendant lights up the ceiling and allows a soft diffusion of light to flood the room, while the Murano glass wall lights give off a romantic warm glow. The bamboo mirror feels playful and helps to bounce light around the space, and there’s also a luxurious Sebastian Herkner sheepskin chair in the corner with an incredibly soft cashmere blanket on the end of the bed to add texture and warmth. Paint & Paper Library’s ‘Truffle’ paint on the walls and ceiling cocoons the space, while the textured Peter Page x Turner Pocock flat weave rug adds personality and character.

This bedroom scheme was designed to be playful, feminine and calm. The soft pink striped wallpaper is muted, but still uplifting, while the leather chest and four poster bed add a sense of luxury. Finally, fun details like the flower shaped lights and rope twist mirror stop it feeling too ‘boutique hotel’. The rattan elements add a little texture to stop the scheme feeling insipid. I’d paint the woodwork in the whole room in this lovely blue/green, while the chair and chest inject some elegance.

We wanted to create a space that felt like a calm retreat but didn’t lack in depth or warmth. We always believe in embracing pattern and not being scared of fabrics you’re drawn to. That’s why we chose this Pierre Frey ‘Papillons’ fabric; it transports us to a warmer climate and has a playfulness about it. A high bed requiring a step up adds a sense of drama, and four-poster beds with curtains make you feel cosy – even in larger rooms. The height and shape of the Penny Morrison lamps balance out the bed, and work well with these shaded wall lights to create a relaxing atmosphere. We never tire of stripes, and the Flora Soames glazed linen is a smart contrast to the intricate pattern of the bed curtains. Arranging antiques alongside newer pieces of furniture strikes an elegant balance, and helps the room feel established and unique. We opted for standalone pieces from Rose Uniacke and Soane for the dressing table and chair – it’s important to have different areas of interest from all viewpoints in the space.
