The Tableware Brand We Love
Although the collection now includes a range of accessories, Rebecca Udall’s eponymous brand was first born out of her own frustration at not being able to find Italian bed linen at a fair price. “My background as a buyer for a bed and bath department gave me the perfect starting point to source my very first collection,” she explains. “With bed linen initially at the core of the offering, I soon expanded it to include table linens and heritage and artisan accessories.”
While it was the placemats that originally caught our eye, Rebecca says it’s been exciting to watch the collection evolve and grow over time. “The long-term vision for the brand is for all the products to be entirely our own design, but at the moment my focus is working closely with heritage and artisan makers, which often means working from their archives or adjusting their designs or colourways to curate enticing collections.”
If Rebecca has a particular product in mind, she’ll research the best place in the world to manufacture it, working with local teams to make tweaks and adjustments so the end result fits the aesthetic of her brand – from softening the scallops on linen placemats to cherry-picking the best design features on Murano glass.
“I spend a lot of time researching the very best manufacturers. European-grown linen is the best in the world as the climate offers optimum growing conditions for flax. Linen is the most hard-wearing, natural fibre and when it’s grown in Europe, it’s even stronger – so it will stand the test of time, while still being beautifully soft. When choosing linen, I prefer to select from Italian and Irish weavers. To me, their craftsmanship and finished feel of the linen is superb. All of our textiles are woven in Europe, and mainly Italy, because of the fantastic knowledge and attention to detail.”
When it comes to colour, Rebecca works across three broad themes. Each collection balances neutral tones such as taupe and white, with classics such as green, pale pink and navy – all of which are easy to style and seasonless. The final flourish comes from more fashion-inspired hues. “Lilac will be prominent in July, with olive green and amber taking centre stage come autumn,” she says. “I’m drawn to an eclectic mix of classic European style. For example, in a tablescape, I love to juxtapose the minimalist look of Danish candles, with softer, romantic ruffles, and all against the backdrop of geometric plates.”
There are lots of new launches planned for 2020. As well as new categories and additional designs, from hand-painted plates to new ruffle linen pieces, keep an eye out for a very exciting collaboration this autumn, says Rebecca.
