Interior designer Kit Kemp MBE has a global reputation for creating joyful, interesting homes and her signature style has won her a legion of fans, both here and around the world. “When designing a room, I always say think of the five Cs – colour, comfort, craft, curation, and character,” explains Kit. “It is all about creating rooms that make a statement about you – it is fun to think creatively at home.”

Internationally recognised – not only for her bold use of colour and pattern but also as a successful textiles and homeware designer – Kit is a champion of art, craft and sculpture. In 2017, she launched Shop Kit Kemp, complete with an online store and showroom in Ham Yard Village, part of the Ham Yard Hotel. From wallpaper collaborations with Andrew Martin to fabric collections for Christopher Farr, as well as dining ranges with Spode and Wedgwood, Kit has merged her design vision with some of the industry’s most respected brands to create playful yet sophisticated products.

“I think interiors should pique your curiosity,” adds Kit. “Every space and every room should have their own little story. They should be fun and playful and lead your eyes into other rooms. Even the smallest spaces can feel bigger if you’re walking through a series of rooms with their own character; it makes it more of a journey.”

Promoting artisans has been one of Kit’s most effective ways to personalise a space and a handpicked selection of one-off designs from some of her favourite artists can be found online.

The Soho Hotel

I like every piece of work to be considered INDIVIDUAL. I always try to achieve comfort, colour and a certain CAREFREE ATTITUDE in my designs.

Cushions are like a PUNCTUATION POINT FOR A SCHEME – they are a dash or a comma or an exclamation mark in any room.
I have always been ADDICTED TO COLOUR, FABRIC AND CRAFTWORK from around the world. It is all done with loving hands and really serves a function.

Ham Yard Hotel Residences

A good rug grounds a room and ADDS NEW LIFE to a space. I use a rug either as a STARTING POINT for a scheme or sometimes as the final finishing touch to bring it all together.

We always OVERSCALE THE HEADBOARD to make it an interesting feature. Use it as a picture to show off beautiful fabrics and detail, then build your scheme around it.

When it comes to designing an INTERIOR SPACE, we often say it’s the SMALLEST DETAILS that can make the BIGGEST IMPACT.
