The Plazacore Trend: An Ultra Glam Take On Preppy Fashion

As the fashion world continues to embrace maximalism, the ‘Plazacore’ – or ‘Plaza Princess’ trend – is only getting bigger. Made popular by social media, it combines the modern preppy aesthetic of Gossip Girl with the old-school glamour of Breakfast At Tiffany’s. The Background

Named after New York’s famous Plaza Hotel, Plazacore’s Upper East Side aesthetic is firmly rooted in 1990s Chanel tweed, houndstooth jackets, matching sets, Mary Janes and ballet flats. The colour scheme spans everything from neutrals to pops of pastel pinks or blues, while feminine details like Peter Pan neckline blouses and sheer tights also feature heavily. Styled up with glamorous accessories and fun finishing touches – think rhinestone earrings, feather trims, bejewelled headbands and silk gloves – Plazacore also incorporates classic hotel pieces like robes and silky nightwear to blur the boundaries between casualwear and eveningwear.

The Designers

While Chanel is a clear reference for anyone keen to embrace Plazacore, Fendi, Balmain, Miu Miu and Ami Paris have quickly followed suit. At the recent shows, Ami Paris presented tweed matching sets and navy blazers paired with white collared shirts, while Miu Miu showed preppy knitwear, oversized checked co-ords and its now-viral ultra-short miniskirts. Elsewhere, Thom Browne took an edgier route with his maximalist, deconstructed designs and exaggerated silhouettes, although this collection also included plenty of pleats and sharp blazers reflective of Plazacore’s influence.

How To Style It

The easiest way to lean into Plazacore is with a matching set, blazer or a chunky headband – just like @LeonieHanne. Minimalists should stock up on the basics – a monochrome tweed cardigan or houndstooth blazer would easily nod to the trend – and it’s also a look that works for the office; just imagine a white Peter Pan collared shirt with a pair of tailored trousers. Finally, if you’re looking to go more glam, add a fun sock and bag like @LeFevreDiary or opt for feather trimmed heels or pyjamas like @TheIndiaEdit.
