Stylish Girls To Have On Your Radar: India Sehmi
We headed to India’s London flat to look at some of her Autumn/Winter wardrobe highlights, and to grill her on her style. From her high-street heroes to the key pieces she’s investing in this season, trust us – you want her tips.
How would you describe your style?
Chic, elevated, wearable.
Why did you decide on these five outfits for today’s shoot?
I was keen to pick a selection of outfits that showcased different sides of my style and wardrobe. I wanted to mix high-low brands and provide outfit inspiration for a range occasions. If we were shooting tomorrow, I’d probably pick different things, but that’s the fun of getting dressed - it’s so dependent on your mood that day.
Navy Sponge Check, £275, Rixo | Turtle Neck Long Sleeve Rib Crop Top In Black, £12, ASOS | Oversized Single-Button Blazer, £79.99 | Black Circle Bag, $170, tde | Black & Gold Dionysus Belt, £315, Gucci, Black Stretch Boots, £100, Alice | Lucy Williams Gold Orb Hoops, £125, Missoma
Which is your favourite of the outfits and why?
The outfit with the white blouse and black trousers. It’s clean and classic with a playful twist, which really aligns with my signature style. I can’t get enough of the trousers from The Frankie Shop – the tailored fit makes them timeless, but they’re still relaxed enough to wear every day. The puff-sleeve Zara blouse complements the tapered leg, and adds something more exciting and current to the look.
What’s your number-one style rule?
Invest in great accessories that you can wear time and time again.
Shirred Leopard-Print Cotton-Blend Maxi Dress, £300, Ganni | Mini Monogram Belt, £250, Louis Vuitton | Square Toe Leather Strappy Heeled Sandals, £85, & Other Stories | LA Grab Bag in Black Croc, £55, Azurina | Treasure Cuff, £70, Tada & Toy | Seasheel Hoops, £260, Tada & Toy
What’s your favourite trend for Autumn/Winter?
Cinched suiting. I’ve been loving wearing belts over blazers to give my existing wardrobe a seasonal update.
What’s your favourite thing you’ve bought for this season?
The oversized petrol-coloured blazer from The Frankie Shop (in the look with the Rixo midi dress). Blazers are perfect for adding an element of sophistication to an outfit and they instantly create that effortless cool vibe. I have about five in my wardrobe as they’re such a staple for me. The colour and oversized shape of this one means it goes with almost everything. It works with the usual jeans and trousers, but I’ve also been loving it with mini dresses. It even looks good on cold days with a Uniqlo down jacket underneath or over gym gear with a hoodie (think off-duty model).
Shirt, £112.49, Burberry | Wide Twill Trousers, £15 (were £34.99), H&M | Cat-Eye Sunglasses, £19.99, Mango | Break-Up 'Needle & Thread' Earrings, £70, Tada & Toy | Esplar Suede-Trimmed Leather Sneakers, £90, Veja
What’s your top tip for transitioning your wardrobe from season to season?
Layers! I wear many of my clothes all year round just by adding or removing layers. By adding a polo neck, tights, boots, a belt and a blazer to the first look it transformed a silky summer slip into a winter-appropriate outfit. You’ll often find me with hidden cashmere cardigans under jackets, leggings under dresses and tights under jeans. I’m all about making my wardrobe work harder.
Any under-the-radar brands you can recommend for autumn?
Pixie Market for elevated basics; Stand for faux fur coats; Olivia Rose Label for statement tops and dresses; Tada + Toy for delicate-meets-cool jewellery; and Womanhood for an underwear update you didn’t know you needed.
Zebra Print Button Up, £59, & Other Stories | Double Breasted Blazer, £146.74, Frankie Shop | Ribcage Straight Ankle, £70 (were £97), Levi's | Star Hoop Earrings, £65, Tada & Toy | Black Lace Up Chunky Boots, £25 (were £48), River Island
What do you wear to winter events?
For a wedding, I’d go for a dress in a classic shape, maxi length, long sleeves and a cinched waist. I’d either opt for a bold print à la Rixo or keep it simple and structured, paired with some killer heels and accessories. If money was no object, I’d choose Alessandra Rich or Zimmermann. Failing that, accessories can really elevate a high-street dress – I have some black scalloped Prada platforms that are my go-to. I also love a vintage designer brooch to spruce up an evening winter look. They’re so underrated and can also be worn as a hair clip or belt buckle for maximum versatility.
For a festive event, it’s got to be sparkles or a rich fabric like velvet or silk. Organza is big this year too. I’m obsessed with renting dresses for special occasions from my favourites HURR and The Endless Wardrobe. It’s so exciting to be able to wear things you wouldn’t otherwise splash out on, especially when you want a showstopper and know you’ll only wear it once. Bonus points for sustainability too.
Favourite high-end designers?
Dior for the feminine silhouettes and attention to detail; Jacquemus for sophisticated sexy; Prada for modern classics; and The Attico for party dresses.
Top of your A/W wishlist?
A gorgeous wintry floral prairie dress from dreamy Dôen. I’m a big fan of cotton dresses and the print and shape of this one gives me real vintage vibes. I think you’d wear it for years to come.
What is your outfit formula for everyday?
I dress for the weather, what I have on that day, and comfort. Usually you’ll find me in outfits like Look 1 as I live in various colours of the Levi’s ribcage jeans. I've actually just started a standalone Instagram account (@themirroredit) to share my daily outfits as people seem to like seeing how I style pieces in my wardrobe for everyday.
Gathered Jacquard Top, £25.99, Zara | Midnight Navy Pleated Trousers, £120.34, The Frankie Shop | Black Stretch Boots, £100, Alice | Medium Leather Top Handle Bag, £1,245, Chloe | Coin Pendant Chain Necklace, £29, & Other Stories | Disco Star Studs, £130, Tada & Toy
Any high-street purchases you’re really pleased with so far this season?
I found the perfect chunky boots at River Island. I’ve been wearing them non-stop – they make everything look a little cooler and they’re so practical for British weather.
The last thing you bought?
The £35 & Other Stories jumper in the colour of the season: butter yellow.
Favourite thing in your wardrobe?
My Gucci Dionysus belt – a week doesn’t go by when I don’t wear it. It looks luxury without being in-your-face designer.
Favourite person to follow on Instagram right now?Tezza for her creative genius; The Tripletsss for cool girl vibes.
And your number-one tip to make your Instagram pictures look good?
Lighting, framing and editing are key. I actually did a blog post all about how I edit my pictures as I got so many questions!
