Pregnancy Style With Kavita

Here at SL, pregnancy style is something we’re often asked about. So we went to blogger and influencer Kavita Cola, who’s just entered her second trimester, to show us some of the most stylish ways to dress a bump. As a stylist, Insta star and Estee Lauder brand ambassador, Kavita’s busy fashion schedule makes her well qualified to demonstrate non-maternity maternity dressing – here’s what she came up with…

Stay True To Your Style

Having slowly but surely come around to the reality that I’m actually pregnant, I’ve found a few style conventions that have been working well for me so far. I’ve tried to stay aligned with looks that my non-pregnant self would have chosen, adapting them to my newly acquired bump.

Comfort Is Key

I’m generally a creature of comfort, and even more so since being pregnant – as the weeks fly by, there is only so much my knees and feet have been able to handle! So when it comes to dresses, I’ve found slightly looser, flowing cuts are cute and comfortable, while wedges instead of heels, and even pairing a nice dress with trainers, can also be a great answer to looking the part whilst not putting yourself in any kind of discomfort.

It Doesn't Have To Be Maternity

The hunt for the perfect pieces that aren’t necessarily made for baby bumps has taken a little creativity, but discovering that we're not just limited to traditional maternity wear means the options are actually endless. For example, the online boutique Nine In the Mirror carefully curates pieces from mid-range designers that aren’t specifically designed for maternity fashion, but still compliment a bump well. There are also some amazing oversized brands that are suited to bump-and-no-bump wear (because you want longevity from your wardrobe, right?), like Hatch – which has some stunning pieces – and loungewear brands Three Graces and Asceno. There are so many possibilities – you’ve just got to get experimental.

the SLIP DRESS

Is there anything more comfortable than a slip dress? This silky pink number is just perfection and I anticipate wearing it for seasons to come; it’ll still look cool post-pregnancy when it’s a bit baggier. While I’ve dressed this look up with a sharp white boot and a leather jacket, I wouldn’t hesitate to wear this dress with a white t-shirt underneath and converse to run around in.

the DUNGAREES

I love wearing these. Let’s be honest, the heat doesn’t do pregnancy any favours and sometimes you just want to balance out the cute with the comfortable – these are the perfect set to do so in. I have been wearing dungarees with a stripe knit underneath when it’s a little on the cold side, but they’re perfect with a tank and sandals for those balmy days.

the EVERYDAY DENIM

I’ve had a couple of pairs of my favourite jeans on rotation and this is one of them. A classic straight cut with an elasticated waist has fitted perfectly during my second trimester. This oversized boxy tank, with a slight frill to keep the look a bit feminine, is great for concealing bumps and lumps that I’m still trying to get my head around

the JERSEY DRESS

This is me in my ultimate comfort zone! A cheap and cheerful grungy stretch dress from H&M Mama, teamed with a classic denim jacket and some New Balance trainers which have a real bounce to them to support my legs and feet. I can move around in this no problem, and it’s just such an easy piece to sling on in the sun and traipse around the city in.

the OCCASION DRESS

A-line cut floaty dresses have been my saviour recently, especially since the sun has come out. With a lovely pair of comfortable wedges from Dida (my favourite right now), this look is perfect for an occasion of some sort, or even just to feel a little bit dressed up for a meeting.
