The Hot Product: Hermès Sandals
All products on this page have been selected by our editorial team, however we may make commission on some products.
The Origin
The Oran first launched in 1997 – a design by shoe designer Pierre Hardy on behalf of Hermès. Pared-back, subtle but instantly recognisable, the straps form the signature H shape and over the years, it’s become a cult classic. Nowadays, it’s available in everything from classic Gold Piqûres Écrues to white with contrasting stitching.
The Evolution
If you loved the Oran then you’ll love the Chypre – pronounced ‘shee-prre’ – which launched last year, so early adopters will be feeling smug. Proof Hermès knows what it’s doing, the Chypre has already become a fashion girl favourite. It's a more directional take on the Oran, albeit sharing the same iconic H strap, but with an anatomical rubber sole and additional adjustable velcro strap. Think of it as an elevated Hermès take on the dad sandal.
While it’s also available in Gold Piqûres Écrues, as well as bolder colours and suede, sheepskin is the standout. Introduced for A/W21, it’s comfortable, easy to wear, and the perfect luxury go-to. They’ve been spotted everywhere on Instagram – from city pavements to poolside – and the styling possibilities are boundless. If elevated comfort is your thing, it doesn’t get better than this.
Who’s Wearing Them
The chunkier Chypre is a testament to our desire for stylish, laidback and practical dressing this summer. With the weather warming up, flat sandals make a more appropriate – not to mention comfortable and versatile – seasonal alternative to trainers and heels. Whether worn with relaxed tailoring for work or summer dresses for weekends, take your cues from the likes of Pernille Teisbaek and Lisa Pitaud – both of whom are fans of the brand’s latest styles.
How To Style Them
The Chypre works for both day and night, giving anything from a dress to denim shorts a bit more polish. Whether it’s slouchy tailoring, a tank and boyfriend shirt for work, or with a silk slip or sundress on holiday, they’re a worthwhile investment.
Where To Buy
There are long waiting lists for these sandals, so getting your name down is imperative. If waiting isn’t something you’re prepared to do, the best places to find them include pre-loved sites like Vestiaire and Sellier Knightsbridge.
