The Story
Growing up in rural New Zealand, founder Maggie Hewitt’s discovered her passion for the natural world and conservation after studying fashion and sustainability at university. It was here that her eyes were opened to the industry’s negative impact on the environment. Setting out to create a fully transparent label and champion sustainable and ethical practices, Maggie Marilyn launched her eponymous label in 2016.
The Mission
While many brands are only just launching their planet-friendly initiatives, Maggie Marilyn has made ethical production a priority since day one. From the materials used to the supply chain, the brand ticks almost every box when it comes to the ‘sustainable brand’ criteria. Every piece is made using only recycled, organic and sustainable materials, while every part of the supply chain takes place within 270 miles of Maggie Marilyn’s studio in Auckland. Reflecting on the importance of ethical production, Hewitt says she believes it’s her “responsibility” to “do better”. She also says it’s her main aim to produce clothing “that enriches the lives of the customer”, as well as “the lives of the people involved in textile and garment production”.
The Collection
Maggie Marilyn’s collection juxtaposes simple, laidback pieces with whimsical designs that still have a timeless feel. Meanwhile, the label’s organic basics line – Somewhere – focuses on the main wardrobe foundations such as tanks, shirts and jersey loungewear, while the rest of the collection features elegant dresses and blouses in pared-back cuts. Injections of pink contrast a largely neutral colour palette, while cut-out, ruffle and lace-up details offer a contemporary twist.
The Price
It’s no secret a sustainable production process often results in a heftier price tag, but while Maggie Marilyn’s pieces aren’t cheap, pieces all fall under the £1,000 mark. Expect to pay higher prices for blazers and dresses, which comes in around £600-£700, whereas prices across the Somewhere line tend to fall shy of £200.
