The Best Of London Fashion Week
The Best…SHOWS
Tailoring was the name of the game for many of the leading Brit labels – they came with a metallic sheen at JW Anderson, in neutral checks at Victoria Beckham and in icy grey at Burberry. Elsewhere, feminine ruffles reigned supreme, spotted, inevitably, on the runways of Molly Goddard, Erdem, Preen and Simone Rocha.

Burberry
Ricardo Tisci roped in some of the biggest names in the modelling world to walk his SS20 runway – Kendall Jenner (with freshly dyed blonde locks), Irina Shayk, Gigi Hadid and, in a throwback to the halcyon days of the brand under Christopher Bailey, Agyness Deyn. The fashion was sophisticated – structured suiting, shirts and dresses all softened by fringing and silk-scarf motifs – whilst the beauty was simple, minimal and grown-up.
Victoria Beckham
Posh Spice no more – VB’s sophisticated, polished take on spring/summer fashion couldn’t be further from her ‘little Gucci dress’ days. The perfect white blazer, languid cream dresses, checks in all shapes and sizes and smart structured coats…it’s almost like Phoebe Philo has been resurrected for SS20.

Erdem
Floral, sequin, embellished, taffeta-laden…what else would you expect from the king of couture, Erdem Moralıoğlu? This season’s collection was dark, moody and dramatic, characterised by billowing skirts and Victoriana detailing, with the surprising addition of long gloves and wide brimmed hats putting a vintage spin on several looks. Take cues and invest in dark florals and layer with structured blazers.
JW Anderson
The tailoring was near perfect at JW Anderson this season; glittering metallics were made wearable thanks to form-fitting, flattering cinching, structured but not oversized shoulders and proportioned lapels. Lace-up, hiking-inspired sandals were a surprise addition, but a welcome pairing to prove suiting is still set to be seriously versatile come spring.

THE BEST… Street Style
The coolest names in fashion were, naturally, out in force in London this week – Sarah Harris, Loulou De Saison and Bettina Looney were unsurprisingly three of the most prolific faces. And unlike some of the bold colours and edgy trends we saw at Copenhagen in the summer, the fash pack took a decidedly more sedate approach to street style this season; a neutral palette, clean, crisp lines, and unfussy details dominated. Here are three of the best looks…

The Pleats
We love Anna Vitiello’s balletic maxi dress – with its fitted top half, unexpected cut-out and dramatic pleated skirt, it’s the perfect balance of cool and feminine.
The Sequins
Pixie Geldof stepped out in this killer gold sequin dress – usually the reserve of a night out, it worked for daytime thanks to her swept back hair and oversized bag. Plus, as far as accessories go, Alexa Chung isn’t bad…
The Sleeves
Marie Claire UK’s digital fashion editor Penny Goldstone proves the statement sleeve is the easiest way to make an impact in this show-stopping Aje dress. Its feminine white, sheer finish is offset with black belt detailing – paired with trainers or heels, it’s a formula that works.

THE BEST… Trend
In and amongst all the suiting and subdued sophistication, it was refreshing to see a healthy dose of femininity, courtesy of Richard Quinn. From sequins to feathers, heavy textures were applied to soft pastel shades and blooming rose motifs to create a romantic, girlish collection that gives us high hopes for a pink renaissance come spring.
THE BEST… FROW
The award for the best FROW goes, of course, to Victoria Beckham, whose entire brood was out in force to celebrate her show. Bookended by Anna Wintour, Edward Enninful and Emanuelle Alt, the editors of Vogue USA, UK and Paris respectively, it’s the FROW that had it all – celebrity, glamour, and some seriously iconic hair.
