The Best Dressed At The Golden Globes 2019

Award season officially kicked off last night with the 76th Golden Globes and delighted though we may be with the slew of British winners, we’re most interested in who wore what. From the glamorous to the cool, here are our best dressed of the night…

Who: Laura Harrier

Wearing: Louis Vuitton

Why we love it: Black can often fail to make an impact on the red carpet, but Laura Harrier shows us there’s an exception to every rule. Heavy embellishment adds a glam factor, whilst white detailing and a statement plunge keep things interesting.

Who: Thandie Newton

Wearing: Michael Kors

Why we love it: Kors eschews traditional embellishment in favour of more modern mirror detailing, which is what gives this gown its dramatic finish. With its column fit and perfectly proportioned cut-outs, it achieves that elusive sexy/sophisticated balance.

Who: Penelope Cruz

Wearing: Ralph and Russo

Why we love it: When we hear a celeb is stepping out in Ralph and Russo, we know we can expect great things – and this killer princess gown proves the design duo aren’t toning things down this award season. Adorned with intricate purple and white sequins, this full-bodied skirt has a show-stopping effect, whilst a bow-detailed halterneck adds an unexpected injection of femininity.

Who: Sandra Oh

Wearing: Versace

Why we love it: Both the show’s host and a winner (she took home the gong for best performance by an actress in a television drama for her role in Killing Eve), Sandra Oh had to make a statement, and this Versace dress didn’t disappoint. The perfect balance of elegant and dramatic, its asymmetric fit, flattering rouching and bold shoulder detail earns it easy glamour points.

Who: Emmy Rossum

Wearing: Monique Lhullier

Why we love it: The red carpet was divided by those in powerful monochrome and others championing classic femininity and, unsurprising given the designer’s pedigree, Emmy Rossum fell easily into the latter category. Full-bodied, Barbie pink, ruffle-detailing… this dress is a feminine red carpet dream.

Who: Julia Roberts

Wearing: Stella McCartney

Why we love it: Julia Roberts isn’t the first to parade the dress-over-trousers look down the red carpet (remember Emma Stone? And Emma Watson?) but it’s refreshing to see a more mature actress deviating from the norm and getting it so right. The reason this works? The trousers have an almost corporate feel, perfectly juxtaposing the feminine, nude tulle of the top half, with satin belt detailing to break it up; two perfect halves of a whole. If this is anything to go by, expect great sartorial things from the actress this season.

Who: Kaley Cuoco

Wearing: Monique Lhullier

Why we love it: We can’t remember seeing midnight blue velvet and white paired together on the red carpet before, but this gown’s simplicity means the look really works, achieving a fresh, clean feel. Black ribbon detailing breaks up the contrasting colours, whilst a soft beauty look ties the whole edit together.

Who: Kiki Layne

Wearing: Custom Dior

Why we love it: Romantic, feminine and almost balletic, this dress embodies everything we love about the Dior house. A bondage-inspired corset balances out a tulle skirt that otherwise teeters on the edge of saccharine, whilst a subtle melange of pinks and whites adds depth to the look.

Who: Olivia Coleman

Wearing: Stella McCartney

Why we love it: A masterclass in how to cover up on the red carpet without looking frumpy, we love the daring chainmail detail to this otherwise fuss-free cold shoulder style. Another lesson in how to make black cool, it’s the surprising balance of classic and rock n roll that actually really works.

Who: Kerri Russel

Wearing: Monique Lhullier

Why we love it: Pulling off plunging head-to-toe sequins is no easy feat, but Kerri Russel nails the look with aplomb. Referencing everything from 1920s glamorous to 80s partywear, in another time and place this look could feel dated, but with throwback fashion high on the trend agenda this season, it feels unexpectedly cool.

Who: Rachel Weiss

Wearing: Celine

Why we love it: We can’t believe we’re actually hailing a Hedi for Celine design a success, but in this case his adherence to his signature puff-ball, monochrome, dramatic Parisian aesthetic is a hit. A surprisingly feminine twist on black and white, it’s the understated fit that stops this look from teetering into OTT territory.
