FOR WALK-INS:

Canteen

You’ll likely be able to get space at one of Notting Hill’s buzziest newcomers, as it’s walk-in only and the queues move quickly. Canteen is the latest outpost from the team behind the nearby Pelican pub and The Hero in Maida Vale. It’s more of the same ethos here: simple, seasonal dishes done well. The interiors are more fun though, with mid-century lighting and lots of bar seating at the steel counter. The focus is on pasta and small plates of regional Italian food, all presented simply and drizzled with lots of olive oil. Don’t miss the dark chocolate mousse for dessert. It’s open for lunch daily and dinner on weekdays.

FOR SOMETHING NEW:

Canal

Earlier this summer, the team behind Crispin and Bistro Freddie opened Canal in Westbourne Park. Along the Grand Union Canal, the restaurant and bar come with a large south-facing terrace and a bistro-style menu by New York-born chef Adrian Hernandez Farina. They’ve also teamed up with some cool collaborators: signature cocktails on tap are made by acclaimed east-London bar A Bar with Shapes for a Name, while bespoke uniforms have been created by British fashion designer Nicholas Daley. Lunch or dinner could include dishes like crab toast, smoked mussels, bluefin tuna crudo, chicken with charred corn and a ‘sharing burger’.

FOR DJ NIGHTS:

Caia

At SheerLuxe, one of the questions we’re asked time and again is: where can you find great food in a fun, party-ready setting? The answer is Caia. Just off Portobello Road, the restaurant offers a huge list of wines from interesting and young producers, alongside a seasonally changing menu of dishes cooked on an open-fire grill. After a meal at the counter, you can head down to the basement where DJs use top-of-the-line kit to spin everything from rare jazz to funk, tropical and disco.

FOR A SLICE:

Ria’s

This relative newcomer quickly made a name for itself thanks to its square, deep-dish, Detroit-style pizzas. Slices are topped with combos like ricotta and basil; pepperoni, soppressata and hot honey; and wild mushrooms with onion jam. Share a couple of slices or order a pizza pie – everything is made using regenerative flour, which is slowly fermented for up to 72 hours and then baked to create a light pizza with crisp, chewy crusts. Drizzles, dips, side salads, soft serve for dessert and affordable cocktails complete the offering.

FOR LATE NIGHTS:

Zephyr

Zephyr has become a Portobello Road staple, known for its cool vibe and Greek-inspired menu that leans towards the seasonal and sustainable. Chargrilled meat and fish are dressed in bold, mezze-style layers – think lamb shoulder with smoked aubergine and tahini, grilled octopus with citrus and herbs, and courgette fritters with whipped feta and honey. The vibe is relaxed, with sharing plates designed to flow. The basement bar downstairs is a destination in its own right, with signature cocktails that suit both early evening aperitifs and late-night lounging. In warmer months, you’ll find al fresco tables on the pavement.

FOR A NIGHT WITH FRIENDS:

The Pelican

Once a scruffy local but now one of west London’s busiest pubs, The Pelican has since been reimagined for Notting Hill’s modern clientele. Downstairs, it’s all bare brick, bentwood chairs and candlelight, while upstairs, the private dining room is a moodier affair, with its own bar and space for up to 30 seated. The menu makes the most of British produce but without the fuss: think crab toast with pickled cucumber, braised leeks slicked in vinaigrette, and a crispy spatchcock chicken. These days, advanced booking is necessary for the restaurant, though locals spill out onto the streets when the sun’s out.

FOR AN OVERNIGHTER:

The Princess Royal

Part of the Cubitt House group – behind The Grazing Goat in Marylebone and The Builders Arms in Chelsea – The Princess Royal is a polished destination pub. Three years ago, the building was updated with a spacious restaurant and horseshoe bar, two private dining rooms and four individually designed bedrooms (from £250pn). Downstairs, chef Ben Tish brings his Mediterranean flair to elevated pub classics, like red prawn crudo with rosemary and orange; beef tartare with pine nuts, mint and dried chilli; monkfish with borlotti beans and salsa verde; and lemon and olive oil cake with whipped mascarpone. There’s also a leafy courtyard lined with olive trees for long lunches and late-night drinks.

FOR INDIAN FOOD:

Empire Empire

You know you’re going to eat well at one of Gunpowder Group’s restaurants – the same people behind the Michelin Bib-awarded Gunpowder and Moi et Toi. Its Indian restaurant in Notting Hill has seriously cool interiors, featuring retro arcade machines, photo booths and disco balls. A great spot for long lunches or dinners, spiced cocktails (like pataka margaritas) accompany a menu of curries, biryanis, kebabs and tikkas, all rooted in the Punjabi region of the Indian subcontinent. Menu highlights include the prawn pakoras, lamb chops and butter chicken – perfect for mopping up with fluffy rotis or garlic naans. Make sure to leave room for the ginger biscuit meringue cheesecake.

FOR INDOOR/OUTDOOR VIBES:

Gold

A few years ago, this neighbourhood favourite quietly took over the site of the legendary Portobello Gold, and it’s been drawing a loyal crowd ever since. The vibe is modern European, with a focus on produce-led sharing plates cooked low and slow in wood ovens or over open flame. Expect dishes like ravioli with ricotta and sorrel, followed by whole sea bream roasted with wild oregano and capers. Inside, the space channels bohemian cool: the original shell lends a raw edge, while aged metals, contemporary furniture and indoor trees soften the mood. There’s even a party room tucked away for private dinners and late-night celebrations.
