Manteca is a textbook example of a Michelin Bib Gourmand spot — serving delicious food at excellent value. This nose-to-tail Italian-inspired restaurant has a selection of fresh pastas, cured meats and Italian wines. Its ‘rapid rigatoni lunch menu’ currently features wild garlic caesar salad followed by rigatoni with slow cooked beef ragu, and meringue with fruits and cream.

The offering: Steak frites for £20 on the ‘budget buster menu’ 

We challenge you to find a more joyful – or better executed – French set menu in London.  Maison François knows simple food is often best, which is why its ‘budget buster’ menu features a generous portion of steak frites for just £20. For a further £20, you can enjoy a glass of champagne, plus any item from the dessert trolley – think apple tart, crème caramel, chocolate mousse or citrus madeleines.

The offering: Two courses for £26, three for £30 (5.30pm-6.30pm)

Tucked behind the Strand, Toklas offers a serene escape with its minimalist interiors and Mediterranean-leaning menu. The current pre-theatre set menu includes starters like mozzarella with cicoria and lemon or slow-grilled carrots with labneh, pistachio and sumac; mains such as hake with chickpeas, tomato and aioli or tagliatelle with tomatoes and parmesan; and poached pear with vanilla ice cream and almonds to finish.

The offering: £29 for four plates, available for lunch on Tues-Thurs, 12pm-3pm (dessert for an additional £4)

Akara in Borough Yards is chef Aji Akokomi’s latest venture. More relaxed than Akoko, the 40-cover restaurant celebrates West African flavours with inventive akara fillings and barbecued mains like aged beef with labu and sea bream with nokoss. Lunch could look like plantain chips with aubergine followed by Lagos-style chicken with efik rice.

Ambassadors' Clubhouse offers a modern Punjabi menu rich in bold flavours and vibrant dishes. The menu includes meats and fish cooked over coals, in the tandoor or made into fragrant curries and served with fluffy rice and breads. There’s also an excellent selection of Pujabi-inspired margaritas, as well as other zingy drinks. The set menu includes papads with chutneys, a starter like lamb kebabs and a main dish (don’t miss the butter chicken chops).

Sommelier Honey Spencer and her partner Charlie Sims’ Sune is one of the best restaurants in Broadway Market. The menu champions standout British produce, with smartly presented sharing dishes and a quietly buzzy atmosphere that sees locals return time and again. The set menu currently includes dishes like tomato, sweet onion and black olive tart, lamb köfte with harissa and labneh, and apricot and pistachio tart.

Skye Gyngell’s Spring at Somerset House is a celebration of British produce and understated luxury.
