What You Should Know About HA Dermal Fillers
WHAT THEY ARE
Dermal fillers, commonly known as simply ‘fillers’, are gel-like substances that are injected into the skin, usually to create volume. “Not only do they address volume loss, but most patients also see a noticeable improvement in their skin quality as well,” explains Dr Christine Hall, medical aesthetics GP. “The skin is smoother, texture is improved and sometimes fillers even reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They can create phenomenal results, and the confidence boost it can give patients is incredible. Hyaluronic acid fillers have been used for many years and have been proven to be safe and effective. In the right hands, and for the right indication, they can create really natural results. In fact, the best compliment our patients receive is that they look refreshed and well-rested, but no one can detect why.”
THE SKIN BENEFITS
Modern fillers don’t just volumise, they can even improve the overall skin quality by delivering deep hydration and stimulating collagen production. According to Swiss aesthetics innovator Teoxane which has developed the molecule for use within its dermal filler range, Resilient Hyaluronic Acid (RHA®), research shows that hyaluronic acid fillers promote new collagen synthesis, replacing the filler’s effect over time with natural tissue regeneration. The unique structure of RHA® fillers not only locks in moisture but also integrates seamlessly into the skin. This allows the fillers to support and maintain the skin’s natural hydration levels over time, leaving it plump, smooth and radiant. By supporting collagen and elastin production, RHA® fillers also restore elasticity, helping the skin adapt better to movement and resist wrinkles. Over time, this bio-stimulating effect makes the skin appear healthier and more youthful.
WHO THEY'RE FOR
The capability of hyaluronic acid dermal filler goes beyond merely replacing lost volume. They can be used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, create a contoured effect or even define a specific facial feature – and so, can suit a range of different skin types, ages and lifestyles. “Treatments can always be tailored to diverse needs,” says Dr Christine. “The Teoxane portfolio of fillers has something to suit everyone, at any age. Even those with very lax skin can be treated with the correct product selection.” You should consult an experienced practitioner to determine whether hyaluronic acid dermal filler treatments are right for you, but for legal and safety reasons, the minimum age is 18.
THE MYTHS
Rooted in research, hyaluronic acid is a reliable, safe dermal filler. However, improper application can lead to issues. Finding a knowledgeable practitioner is essential for the best results.
Pillow Face
A phrase used to describe a puffy or unnaturally plump look, this tends to occur when too much filler is injected. “The biggest misconception I hear about dermal fillers is that they don’t look natural,” says Dr Christine. “But what people don’t realise is when done well, they’re undetectable.” Make sure you choose a skilled practitioner who subscribes to the ‘less is more’ approach for a natural-looking effect.
Migration
Filler can shift from its original placement to adjacent tissue if not injected correctly. Again, choosing an experienced practitioner will reduce this risk because their anatomical knowledge in combination with an in-depth assessment of your face prior to treatment will allow them to inject the product into exactly the right areas.
Flawed Degradation
Hyaluronic acid fillers are not permanent and are designed to be gradually broken down by the body’s natural metabolic process. This allows for corrections or adjustments, a unique advantage of the ingredient. “It’s a good idea to keep your own photos so that you can keep track over time,” explains Dr Christine. “Something I encounter often is patients forgetting what they looked like before and thinking the effects have worn off – but then when you compare this to the before pictures, it’s clear the results are still there.”
THE AFTERCARE & SIDE EFFECTS
“After having hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, you may experience bruising and swelling, but it shouldn’t prohibit you from going about your day-to-day life,” says Dr Christine. “The amount of swelling depends on the area – for example, with cheek filler there’s often only minimal swelling, if any, whereas lip filler is more prone to swelling and bruising due to the number of blood vessels in that area. Risks of bruising and swelling are increased by alcohol and heat, so we advise our patients against saunas, heavy exercise and alcohol for 24 hours post-procedure. Your practitioner will be able to give you more specific aftercare advice and explain what downtime you can expect after your treatment.”
