Why It’s Cult…
The decision by the Parisian house to quietly change the formula of this cult product last year hasn’t made it any less desirable. In fact, beauty insiders agree the latest iteration is the best yet, with more hydration to cloak the skin with natural-looking glow. “Chanel’s Les Beiges Bronzing Cream is such an iconic product because it’s so versatile – it can be worn as a bronzer, contour, blusher, eyeshadow, and the pot is huge, too, so you really get your money’s worth,” explains Chanel make-up artist and SL beauty contributor Zoë Taylor. “It really was a one-of-a-kind product when it first launched, and the newest formula is even more hydrating, but don’t worry, it won’t leave your skin looking oily. It’s one of my all-time favourite Chanel products – you might find it difficult to use any other bronzer ever again.”
“I love it is because it’s so creamy and gives you that even finish and glow we all crave – plus, it’s matte without looking flat,” agrees make-up artist Lisa Potter-Dixon. “The latest formula uses coconut oil, but only a small amount, so it’s still non-comedogenic and won’t clog up your pores.”
How It Works…
A hybrid between a cream and powder bronzer (you’ll find it applies like the former but dries down like the latter) the Les Beiges Bronzing Cream is the kind of product even beauty novices can use with ease. “It’s utterly fool-proof,” agrees Zoë. “It glides onto bare skin or over make-up seamlessly and never goes patchy throughout the day. It’s incredible how long-wearing it is, actually, considering it’s a cream formula.”
It only comes in one, universal shade, but Zoë claims that’s no reason to be put off. “It only comes in one colour – which may seem mad – but it’s designed to be universally flattering. If you feel like it’s too light for you, then try mixing a little in with your foundation to create the perfect healthy colour for your skin tone.”
Where To Use It…
While most people will gravitate towards using this as a bronzer – it’s in the name after all – there are several ways to get the most out of it. “I love to use it as a conventional bronzer straight onto moisturised skin or over make-up,” says Zoë. “Apply it with a fluffy brush, and similarly if you’re using it as a blusher. Alternatively, mix it with your moisturiser to create a veil of colour and apply this with your fingers, really working it into the skin for a believable, natural glow. Because it’s so versatile, you can really opt for whatever application you feel most comfortable with.”
Lisa agrees using a brush is the easiest route to flawless application: “Swirl a brush into the formula, tap the excess off onto your hand and begin by applying it under your cheek, then gently on the forehead and anywhere else the sun would naturally hit. If you’re still not sure, use the figure of three rule to catch all the natural contours of your face – just remember to use a good brush to ensure everything blends properly.” If you’re still not entirely confident, check out Lisa’s tutorial here.
Final Tips…
If you’re wondering how to make your way through such a large pot before the product expires, Zoë suggests thinking outside the box when it comes to this multi-purpose beauty staple. “You can even use it as an eye shadow – either on its own or as a base with powders blended over the top,” she suggests. “Alternatively, use a little fluffy brush over the lips to add a light touch of shading before you apply lipliner to build up your pout. Also, don’t forget to run it over your neck and décolletage if you’re using it mainly to add warmth – it’s a trick that makes everyone look instantly more youthful.”
